About

Virateshwar Temple Sohagpur, also known locally as Virat Mandir, Virateshvara Temple, or Sohagpur Banganga, is an ancient Hindu temple and a significant pilgrimage centre located in the Baan Ganga/Sohagpur area of Shahdol district, Madhya Pradesh.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, the temple also enshrines other revered deities including Ganesha, Saraswati, Vishnu, Narasimha, Ardhanarishvara, Agni, Batuk Bhairav, Amrut Bhairav, and Parvati.

Recognized as an ASI protected monument, the temple stands as an exquisite example of Nagara (North Indian) architectural style. Pilgrims and visitors can enjoy free darshan at Virateshwar Temple Sohagpur, with entry open daily from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

The temple is especially vibrant during the festival season, with Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Shravan Somwar (July–August), and the Banganga Mela (January, around Makar Sankranti) drawing large gatherings.

During these times, prasadam such as charanamrit, sugar crystals, fruits, and sweets is distributed, and food is served by local groups. Regular poojas include Nitya Puja (daily worship), Jalabhishek, and Rudrabhishek (available on request), conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi.

The best time to visit the temple is during winter (November to February), monsoon (June to September), in the morning hours (8 AM–12 PM), or during evening aarti.

The temple encourages traditional or modest attire: men are advised to wear trousers, jeans, shirts, or kurtas, while women should opt for sarees, salwar suits, or modest kurtis. Shorts and sleeveless wear are discouraged. Reaching Virateshwar Temple Sohagpur is convenient.

Visitors can arrive at Shahdol town by train or road from cities like Jabalpur, Katni, or Rewa. From Shahdol Railway Station (3 km away) or the New Bus Stand, auto-rickshaws or taxis are readily available to the temple, which is about 3–5 km from the main town hubs.

The nearest airports are Jabalpur Airport (143 km) and Khajuraho Airport (200 km). For accommodation, options like Shreyash Resort (1.4 km), Green Velly Park & Resort (1.5 km), and several budget or mid-range hotels near the Shahdol railway station and market area are available.

The temple complex offers open space and informal parking, with wheelchair-accessible entry paths and accessible parking near the outer grounds. However, the inner stone terraces and steps may require assistance.

Photography is permitted in the outer courtyards and exterior, but is restricted inside the sanctum sanctorum; commercial video setups may require prior permission.

Nearby attractions include Maa Virateshwari Mandir, Mohan Ram Talab, Banganga Park & Fairground, Sarfa Dam, Sone River picnic spots, and Siddhi Baba Waterfall, making Virateshwar Temple Sohagpur an ideal destination for pilgrims and tourists exploring the spiritual and natural beauty of Madhya Pradesh.
