About

Mamleshwar Temple, also known by local names such as Amareshwar, Amaraleshwar, Amaleshwar, and Amleshwar Mahadev, is a revered Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Located in the Brahmpuri or Godarpura area of Omkareshwar, Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, this temple stands on the banks of the sacred Narmada River.

Recognized as an ancient temple and an important Jyotirlinga pilgrimage centre, Mamleshwar Temple is also protected as an ASI monument, reflecting its historical and spiritual significance.

The temple is constructed in the Nagara (North Indian) architectural style, and its heritage is linked to successive regional dynasties, with a notable association to Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar through local trusts.

The exact historical period of its construction remains unknown or disputed, but its enduring presence and continued patronage underscore its importance in the spiritual landscape of central India.

Mamleshwar Temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with the inner sanctum closed for rituals between 12:20 PM and 1:15 PM, and again at 4:00 PM. Pilgrims can participate in free darshan or opt for VIP darshan for a fee of ₹300.

The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are expected to wear dhoti-kurta, kurta-pyjama, or modest trousers and shirts, while women should dress in sarees, salwar kameez, or modest kurtis with dupattas. Western or revealing attire is discouraged.

Daily poojas include Mangal Aarti (5:00–5:30 AM), Apranha Aarti (12:00–12:30 PM), and Sandhya Rituals (7:30–8:00 PM). Special poojas such as Jalabhishek/Bilva Pooja and Laghu Rudrabhishek/Narmada Mata Abhishek are available for ₹500 and ₹1299 respectively, conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi.

Major festivals celebrated here include Mahashivratri (February-March), Shravan Somwaar (July-August), Kartik Poornima (November-December), and Makar Sankranti (January). The best time to visit is early morning, during winter months, or in the festival season.

Reaching Mamleshwar Temple is convenient from Indore or Khandwa. From Indore, travel via Khandwa Road (NH 347BG) through Simrol, Barwaha, and Mortakka (78–80 km, 2–2.5 hours). From Khandwa, take a bus or cab north via Sanawad and Mortakka/Omkareshwar (70–72 km, 1.5–2 hours).

The nearest railway stations are Omkareshwar Road (12 km), Khandwa Junction (70 km), and Indore Junction (78 km). The closest airport is Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport, Indore (77 km).

Accommodation options include Shree Gajanan Maharaj Sansthan (Bhakt Niwas), MP Tourism Narmada Resort, local dharamshalas and ashrams in Brahmpuri, and hotels in Barwaha or Indore. Parking is available 1–1.5 km from the temple, though wheelchair accessibility is limited due to the ancient structure.
