Gadkalika Temple

Nestled near the Sthirman Ganesh and Bhartrihari Caves area, right on the banks of the sacred Kshipra River, this temple is a significant spiritual destination for devotees of Goddess Shakti (Amman).

The temple is also home to other deities including Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati, Gaur Bhairav, and Lord Shiva, making it a vibrant hub of Hindu worship.

The temple’s architecture follows the traditional Nagara (North Indian) style, reflecting its ancient roots and the renovations carried out over centuries.

While the exact historical period of the temple is unknown or disputed, records indicate that it was renovated by Emperor Harshavardhana in the 7th century CE, with further contributions from the Paramara rulers and the modern Gwalior State (Scindias).

Today, Gadkalika Temple stands as a living heritage temple, continuing to attract pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike. Devotees can participate in daily rituals and poojas, with the temple open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 or 10:00 PM.

The best times for darshan are early morning (5–8 AM), morning hours (8 AM–12 PM), or during the evening aarti. Morning Aarti is held from 6:30 AM to 7:00 AM, while the Evening Aarti takes place from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

Special poojas like Kumkum Archana and personal havans are also performed, with rituals conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi. Entry for darshan is free, making it accessible to all devotees.

The temple observes a modest dress code: men are expected to wear traditional or conservative Indian attire, and women should opt for sarees, salwar-kameez, or kurtis with covered shoulders and legs.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the sanctum, and visitors are advised to keep their phones switched off or put away within the complex.

Major festivals celebrated at Gadkalika Temple include Chaitra Navratri (March–April), Sharad Navratri (September–October), Kalidasa Samaroh (November), and Basant Panchami.

During these times, community meals are organized, and standard prasad such as kumkum, flowers, misri, or dry sweets is distributed.

Reaching Gadkalika Temple is convenient: arrive in Ujjain by train at Ujjain Junction (5 km away) or fly into Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar International Airport, Indore (55 km away). From Ujjain Junction, auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, or cabs can take you to the temple in about 15 minutes.

Ample roadside and open-air parking is available, though some old stone steps may pose challenges for those with mobility issues.
