About

Sandipani Ashram Temple, also known locally as Maharishi Sandipani Ashram or Sandipani Muni Ashram, is a revered pilgrimage centre and ancient temple located on Mangalnath Marg near the Ankpat area in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.

Set along the tranquil banks of the Kshipra River, this ashram temple stands as a significant spiritual destination for devotees of Lord Shiva and followers of the Guru tradition.

The temple’s sanctum is dedicated to Lord Shiva, while the complex also honors Guru Sandipani, Lord Krishna, Balarama, Sudama, and Kubera.

The presence of these deities reflects the ashram’s deep-rooted associations with spiritual learning and the ancient Indian tradition of guru-shishya (teacher-disciple). The temple is renowned for its Nagara (North Indian) architectural style, which adds to its serene and historical atmosphere.

Visitors can experience the spiritual ambience of the Sandipani Ashram Temple daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

The best time to visit is during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), throughout the morning (8 AM–12 PM), or in the winter months from November to February, when the weather is pleasant for darshan and meditation.

Free darshan is available to all visitors, and the temple observes a modest dress code: men are expected to wear conservative Indian clothing covering legs and shoulders, while women should opt for traditional or modest attire covering shoulders and knees.

The temple’s daily rituals include the Morning Aarti around 7:30 AM and the Evening Aarti at approximately 6:30 PM. Special ceremonies such as Vidyarambh Sanskar are also conducted, with poojas performed in Sanskrit and Hindi.

Major festivals celebrated here include Guru Purnima in Ashada (July), Krishna Janmashtami in Shravana/Bhadrapada (August/September), and Saraswati Puja or Vasant Panchami in Magha (January/February).

Reaching the ashram is convenient: arrive at Ujjain Junction railway station (5.5 km away) or Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport in Indore (55 km away). From Ujjain Junction, auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, or taxis are readily available to reach Mangalnath Marg.

For those coming from Indore Airport, taxis or buses connect to Ujjain, followed by local transport to the ashram. Parking is available with designated open spaces and wheelchair-accessible pathways.

Personal photography is permitted in gardens and exteriors, though restrictions may apply inside prayer halls. Traditional dry prasad is offered, and while there is no large-scale annadanam within the ashram, nearby eateries and charity kitchens provide meals.

Accommodation options abound in Ujjain city, including hotels and dharamshalas.

Nearby attractions include Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, Mangalnath Temple, Shree Harsiddhi Mata Shaktipeeth Temple, Kal Bhairav Temple, Ram Ghat, and Gomti Kund, making Sandipani Ashram Temple a central part of any spiritual journey in Ujjain.
