Vellayani Devi Temple

This ancient temple is dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti (Amman), and also enshrines Lord Ganapathy, Lord Shiva, Nagaraja, and Madan Thampuran. The temple’s mixed and renovated architectural style reflects its living heritage status, maintained by a local panchayat trust.

Pilgrims and devotees visit the Vellayani Devi Temple throughout the year, with the best time to visit being the winter months from November to February, during the festival season, or at the time of evening aarti and morning hours between 8 AM and 12 PM.

The temple offers free darshan to all visitors, and poojas are conducted in both Sanskrit and Malayalam. One of the main rituals is the Madhu Pooja, held on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM.

The temple is renowned for its grand festivals, including the Kaliyoottu Mahotsavam, celebrated once every three years between February and April, and the Pongala Festival (Aswathy Pongala), observed in March-April during the Malayalam month of Meenam on Aswathy Nakshatram.

These festivals attract large gatherings and are marked by special Annadanam, where prasadam such as pori (puffed rice), coconuts, and Vara are distributed, with large-scale community feasts during major celebrations.

Visitors are required to follow a traditional dress code: men should wear a Kerala mundu (dhoti), with shirts and T-shirts discouraged or removed near the inner sanctum, while women are expected to wear saree, set-mundu, traditional long skirt and blouse, or churidar with dupatta, ensuring modest attire.

Reaching Vellayani Devi Temple is convenient from Thiruvananthapuram city by heading south toward Nemom via NH-66 or the Karamana-Nemom route.

From Nemom or Pappanamcode, proceed toward Vellayani-Kalliyoor road to Vellayani Junction, then travel 1.5 km west or northwest along lakeside roads to the temple. Local auto-rickshaws and KSRTC buses are readily available from city stands.

The nearest railway stations are Nemom (5.5 km), Thiruvananthapuram Central (8.5 km), and Kochuveli (14 km), while Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is about 13.2 km away.

For accommodation, pilgrims can choose from lakeside homestays in Vellayani, luxury and mid-range resorts at Kovalam (6-7 km), or city hotels in Trivandrum (8-9 km).

The temple’s proximity to attractions such as Vellayani Lake, Kireedam Bridge, Kovalam Beach, Parasurama Swami Temple, and Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple makes it an ideal spiritual and cultural destination.

Photography is strictly prohibited within the premises, and basic open parking is available near the temple junction, though it can be congested during festivals.
