About

Aruvippuram Shiva Temple, also known locally as Aruvippuram Siva Temple, Aruvippuram Kshetram, or Aruvippuram Ashram, is a revered pilgrimage centre situated on the banks of the Neyyar River in the Aruvippuram/Perumpazhuthoor area near Neyyattinkara, Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala.

This ancient temple is renowned as a living heritage site and is managed by a panchayat/local trust. Built by Sree Narayana Guru in the modern era, the temple stands as a significant spiritual and cultural landmark for devotees of Lord Shiva.

The temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with shrines also devoted to Lord Ganesha and Sree Narayana Guru (Guru Mandiram). The tranquil riverbank setting and ashram atmosphere make it a unique destination for those seeking spiritual solace and traditional rituals.

Aruvippuram Shiva Temple welcomes devotees for darshan with free entry and observes a strict traditional dress code: men are required to wear a mundu (dhoti/veshti) and be bare-chested near the sanctum, while women should wear saree, salwar kameez, or skirt and blouse.

Western attire such as jeans, shorts, or short tops is not permitted inside the inner enclosure. Temple timings are from 5:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM, with poojas conducted in both Sanskrit and Malayalam.

Devotees can participate in rituals such as Neyyabhishekam and Pushpanjali (each priced at ₹10), Sahasranamarchana (₹100), and Mala Pooja. The best times to visit are during the winter months (November to February), early mornings, evening aarti, and the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals include Maha Shivaratri (February–March) and the Annual Ten-Day Festival (Utsavam) in April–May. Reaching the temple is convenient: from Thiruvananthapuram city, travel south toward Neyyattinkara via NH 66 or the Trivandrum-Nagercoil route through Balaramapuram.

From Balaramapuram or Neyyattinkara, local interior roads lead to Aruvippuram. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are readily available from nearby towns. The nearest railway stations are Neyyattinkara (4.5 km) and Thiruvananthapuram Central (24 km), while Trivandrum International Airport is 22 km away.

For accommodation, visitors can choose from standard and deluxe hotels in Neyyattinkara and Trivandrum city, or opt for local homestays in Neyyattinkara and Chenkal.

The temple offers vibhuti, kumkum, sandalwood paste, floral offerings, and edible prasad, with free annadanam provided especially during Maha Shivaratri and festival days. Adequate parking is available near the temple and ashram grounds, though it fills quickly during major festivals.

Photography is allowed only in the outer premises and natural surroundings, while it is strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum and main prayer areas.

Nearby attractions include the scenic Aruvippuram Waterfalls, Kodithookkimala (Guru's meditation cave), Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Siva Temple at Kazhivoor, Kovalam Beach, and Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. For more information, devotees may visit the official website or contact the temple directly at +91 471 2275545.
