About

Vedaranyeswarar Temple, also known locally as Tirumaraikadu, Vedaranyam, Maraikadu, or Thiru Marai Kadar Temple, is a revered ancient temple and significant pilgrimage centre dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Situated near the Vedaranyam bus stand in the city of Vedaranyam, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, this temple stands as a living heritage monument with deep historical roots dating back to the Chola period.

The temple’s construction is attributed to Aditya Chola I, with evidence of earlier activity during the reign of Mahendra Pallavan, making it a site of immense historical and spiritual value. The temple’s Dravidian architecture is a visual delight, drawing devotees and visitors alike.

The sanctum is dedicated to Lord Shiva, while other deities worshipped here include Vedanayaki (Ambal), Lord Muruga, Lord Ganesha, Navagraha, Durga, and Lord Thyagaraja. The temple is renowned for its vibrant pooja schedule, with rituals conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit.

Devotees can participate in the Morning Pooja from 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM and again from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM, followed by the Mid-day Pooja between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

In the evenings, the Afternoon Pooja takes place from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Evening Pooja from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and Night Pooja from 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Free darshan is available for all visitors. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM/12:30 PM and from 4:00 PM/5:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the early morning hours or during the evening aarti.

Dress code is strictly enforced: men are required to wear dhoti, pajama with upper garment, or formal trousers and shirts, while women should wear saree, half-saree, or churidhar with dupatta. Shorts, mini-skirts, low-waist jeans, and sleeveless tops are not permitted.

Major festivals celebrated here include Masi Magam Brahmotsavam (May-June), Aadi Pooram (July-August), Vinayaka Chaturthi (August-September), and Skanda Sashti (October-November).

The temple offers vibhuti and special prasadam during festivals, and an Annadhanam scheme is supported by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE Department.

Reaching Vedaranyeswarar Temple is convenient: from Tiruchirappalli International Airport (150 km) or Madurai Airport (180 km), visitors can travel by taxi or bus. The nearest railway stations are Vedaranyam (0 km), Thiruvarur Junction (45 km), and Nagapattinam Junction (48 km).

From the Vedaranyam bus stand, the temple is just a 500-meter walk or auto-rickshaw ride away. Accommodation is available at temple guesthouses and budget hotels in Vedaranyam, with more options in Nagapattinam and Velankanni.

Street parking is available, with dedicated spaces managed during festivals, and the premises are accessible for those with mobility challenges in the outer courtyards. Photography is prohibited inside the sanctum, but may be permitted in outer areas.
