About

The Ardhanarishvara Temple, also known locally as Swetharanyeshwarar Temple, Budhan Sthalam, and Thiruvenkadu Temple, is a revered ancient temple situated on the banks of a river in Thiruvengadu, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu.

This pilgrimage centre is renowned for its Dravidian architecture and is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with Goddess Parvati, Budhan (Mercury), and Agora Moorthy also enshrined within its sacred precincts.

Pilgrims and devotees visiting the Ardhanarishvara Temple can experience darshan through multiple entry types: free darshan, special darshan for a nominal fee of ₹10, and seeghra (quick) darshan for ₹50.

The temple’s daily timings are from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 8:30 or 9:00 PM, allowing ample opportunity for devotees to participate in rituals and seek blessings. Poojas are conducted in both Tamil and Sanskrit, catering to a diverse group of worshippers.

The best time to visit the temple is during the morning hours between 8 AM and 12 PM, or in the evening during aarti. The winter months from November to February offer a pleasant climate, and weekdays are generally less crowded. The temple also sees increased footfall during the festival season.

For those planning a visit, the temple maintains a traditional dress code: men are required to wear a dhoti with a shirt or pyjama/kurta, while women are requested to wear a saree, half-saree, or chudidar with dupatta.

Free parking is available, and the temple provides wheelchair-accessible entrances and parking, ensuring accessibility for all devotees. Reaching the Ardhanarishvara Temple is convenient. The nearest railway stations are Sirkazhi (10 km away) and Mayiladuthurai Junction (25 km away).

Tiruchirappalli International Airport is about 140 km from the temple, while Chennai International Airport is approximately 250 km away. Visitors can take taxis or local buses from these transit points.

Regular bus services connect major cities like Chennai, Trichy, and Nagapattinam to Sirkazhi or Poompuhar, from where local transport is available to Thiruvenkadu.

Accommodation options include several lodges and cottages near the temple, with additional hotels and guest houses in Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthurai.

Nearby attractions such as Poompuhar Beach, Thirukadaiyur Sri Abirami Amman Temple, Thirunallar Saniswaran Temple, and Vaitheeswaran Koil offer enriching experiences for pilgrims and tourists alike. Photography is permitted in the outer corridors and temple courtyard, but not inside the main sanctum or near the main deity.
