About

Nagapattinam Kayarohana Swami Temple, also known locally as Kayarohanaswami Temple, Kayaroganeswarar Temple, and Neelayathakshi Amman Temple, is a revered Hindu pilgrimage centre located in Melakottaivasal, Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu.

This ancient temple, set gracefully on a riverbank, is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva and is celebrated for its Dravidian architectural style. The temple is a vibrant spiritual hub, drawing devotees from across the region for darshan, poojas, and festivals throughout the year.

Within the temple complex, worship is offered not only to Lord Shiva but also to Nilayathakshi Amman, Thyagaraja (a form of Shiva), the deities of the eight directions, Goddess Gajalakshmi, Lord Dakshinamurthi, and the Navagraha. The temple stands as a living heritage site, managed by a panchayat or local trust, and its origins are linked to the Lakolisa cult, though the exact historical period of its construction remains unknown or disputed.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM, making early morning and evening aarti times especially auspicious for darshan. Devotees can participate in free darshan or opt for special darshan as per their preference. Daily poojas are conducted in Tamil, with special rituals such as the Pradosha Pooja held bi-monthly and the Sakthi Darshan attracting many worshippers. The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are encouraged to wear trousers or dhotis, while women are recommended to wear sarees, churidars, or long skirts.

Nagapattinam Kayarohana Swami Temple is renowned for its vibrant festivals, including the Vaikasi Wedding Festival (May–June), Aani Thirumanjanam/Procession (June–July), Aadi Pooram (July–August), Aipasi Annabishekam (October–November), Tirukarthikai (November–December), and Shivrathri (February–March). During these times, prasadam such as vibhuti, sandal paste, and special food preparations are distributed, and annadanam is generally managed on-site.

Reaching the temple is convenient, with Nagapattinam Junction railway station just 1 km away and the Nagapattinam New Bus Stand a short drive. Auto-rickshaws and local buses are readily available, and the temple is centrally located in Melakottaivasal. Limited parking is available nearby, but walking from surrounding areas is often easier. For accommodation, the temple offers basic rooms, and there are several budget and mid-range hotels in Melakottaivasal, near the bus stand, and in the harbour area. Additional options are available in Velankanni, 12 km away.

Visitors should note that photography is not allowed inside the main sanctum sanctorum but may be permitted in the outer areas. Nearby attractions include Thirunagai Divya Desam, Nagapattinam Lighthouse, Nagore Dargah, Sikkal Navaneetheswarar Swami Temple, and the Velankanni Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, making this an ideal destination for pilgrims and tourists alike.
