About

Thiruvenkadu Swetharanyeswarar Temple, also known locally as Budhan Sthalam and Swetharanyeswarar Thirukkoil, is a revered ancient temple situated in Thiruvenkadu near Sirkazhi, in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu.

This temple, dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, is recognized as a significant pilgrimage centre and riverbank temple, reflecting the grandeur of Dravidian architecture.

Built during the illustrious Chola period by Raja Raja Chola I, Thiruvenkadu Temple stands as a living heritage temple, drawing devotees and heritage enthusiasts alike.

The temple is renowned for its association with Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Swetharanyeswarar, and also houses shrines for Goddess Parvati (Brahmavidyambigai), Budhan (Mercury), Lord Aghoramurthy (Veerabhadrar), Durga, Kali, and Lord Vishnu.

Pilgrims visit to seek blessings, especially for Budhan-related rituals, making it a prominent Budhan Sthalam in Tamil Nadu. Darshan at Thiruvenkadu Swetharanyeswarar Temple is available through free entry, with timings from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

The best times to visit are early mornings between 5 and 8 AM, during evening aarti, in the winter months (November to February), or during the annual brahmotsavam and festival season.

The temple observes a modest dress code: men are expected to wear dhotis, veshtis, or trousers, while women should opt for sarees, churidars, or salwar kameez.

A variety of poojas and rituals are performed here, including daily poojas, Special Abhishekam for Budhan on Wednesdays, Aghoramurthy Puja on Sunday nights, Pitru Dosha Rituals (Rudra Padam), and the unique 17-Lamp Worship.

Poojas are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit, allowing devotees from different linguistic backgrounds to participate meaningfully. Vibhuti (holy ash) is distributed as the primary prasadam.

The temple celebrates festivals such as the Masi Float Festival (Theppotsavam) during the Tamil month of Masi (mid-February to mid-March) and Indra Vizha, attracting large gatherings of devotees.

For those planning a visit, Thiruvenkadu is accessible via Sirkazhi, Mayiladuthurai, and Kumbakonam, with convenient bus and taxi services. The nearest railway stations are Sirkazhi (12 km), Vaitheeswaran Koil (10 km), and Mayiladuthurai Junction (25 km).

The closest airports are Trichy International Airport (145 km) and Chennai International Airport (270 km). Accommodation options are limited in Thiruvenkadu itself, so most visitors stay in nearby towns such as Sirkazhi, Vaitheeswaran Koil, Mayiladuthurai, or Chidambaram.

Parking is available in informal areas near the entrance, though modern wheelchair facilities are not present. Photography is permitted in the outer praharam but strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum, and professional equipment requires permission.

Nearby attractions include Vaitheeswaran Koil Temple, Keezhperumpallam Naganathaswamy Temple, Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, and Sirkazhi Temple, making Thiruvenkadu an ideal stop on a spiritual journey through Tamil Nadu.
