About

Vaideeswaran Koil, also known locally as Vaitheeswaran Koil, Vaitheeswarankoil, Pullirukkuvelur, or Tirupullirukkuvelur, is a revered ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Situated on the banks of a river in Pullirukkuvelur, near Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, this temple stands as a prominent pilgrimage centre, attracting devotees from across India.

The temple is renowned for its Dravidian architecture and holds the status of a living heritage temple, with origins tracing back to the Chola period.

It was initially built by Kulothunga Chola I, with later contributions from the Pandya, Nayak, and Maratha rulers, reflecting a rich historical legacy.

The main deity worshipped here is Lord Shiva, accompanied by Goddess Parvati (Thaiyal Nayagi), Selva Muthukumaran (Lord Muruga), Angarakan (Mars), Surya (Sun), Sambathi, and Jatayu.

The temple is especially significant for those seeking relief from planetary afflictions, as Angarakan (Mars) is one of the principal deities.

Daily poojas and rituals are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit, with special ceremonies such as Abhishekam (morning, priced at ₹200 and ₹1000), Angaraka Vrat/Pooja (Tuesdays, ₹100 and ₹1000), and Navagraha Archana (₹51 and ₹501).

Devotees can also participate in homams like Santhana Gopala Putra Kameshti, Sevvai Dosham Nivarthi, and Shatru Samhara Moola Mantra Homam. Darshan at Vaideeswaran Koil is available through both free and special entry options.

The temple is open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The best time to visit is in the early morning (5–8 AM), during the winter months (November to February), or in the festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Skanda Sashti (October–November), Brahmotsavam (March–April), and the Kartikai festival. For those planning a visit, the temple is accessible by road and rail.

From Chennai, take the ECR towards Cuddalore, then Chidambaram, and onward to Vaitheeswaran Koil (approximately 230 km). Local buses and taxis are available from Sirkazhi (7–9 km) and Mayiladuthurai (13 km).

The nearest railway stations are Vaitheeswaran Koil Railway Station, Sirkazhi (7 km), and Mayiladuthurai Junction (13 km). The closest airports are Tiruchirappalli International Airport (145 km) and Chennai International Airport (230 km).

Devotees are required to follow a traditional dress code: men should wear a dhoti with a shirt or formal trousers and shirt, avoiding shorts and sleeveless tops; women are advised to wear saree, salwar kameez, or a long skirt with blouse, avoiding tight western wear and sleeveless tops.

Parking is available near the temple, though it can get crowded, especially on Tuesdays. Photography and videography are not permitted inside the sanctum sanctorum or main temple premises.

Accommodation options include hotels and lodges in Vaitheeswaran Koil town, temple mandapams/rooms for devotees, and additional choices in Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthurai.

Prasadam such as salt, pepper, and jaggery mix, as well as Thiruchandu Uruthirai (medicinal ash), is distributed, especially during festivals. For more information, devotees can visit the official website at https://vaitheeswarankoil.org/ or contact +91 94430 05376.
