About

Sirkazhi Brahmadesam Temple, also locally known as Sattainathar Temple, Brahmapureeswarar Temple, Thoniappar Temple, Sri Kalipuram, and Thonipuram, is a prominent ancient temple and pilgrimage centre dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Situated near the town center of Sirkazhi, close to the banks of the Kollidam River in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, this temple is renowned for its Dravidian architecture and historical significance.

The temple traces its origins to the Pallava period, with substantial expansions carried out by the Chola rulers, making it a living heritage temple that continues to attract devotees and visitors throughout the year.

The main deity worshipped here is Lord Shiva, and the temple also houses shrines for other deities such as Thirunilainayaki, Sthira Sundari, Thiripurasundari, and Thirugnanasambandar. Rituals and poojas are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit, preserving the traditional practices of the region. The temple is open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with the morning hours between 8 AM and 12 PM and the evening aarti time being the best periods to visit for a serene spiritual experience.

Devotees can choose from different types of darshan: free darshan, Seeghra darshan for a fee of ₹150, and Special darshan for ₹500. To maintain the sanctity of the temple, a conservative dress code is advised—men are encouraged to wear traditional attire such as dhoti with a shirt or kurta, while women are suggested to wear sarees, churidars, or long skirts with tops.

Reaching the Sirkazhi Brahmadesam Temple is convenient. The nearest railway station is Sirkazhi Railway Station, just 2 km away, with easy access via local auto-rickshaws. State-run and private buses connect Sirkazhi to Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai, and Pondicherry. For those traveling from Chennai, the temple can be reached by driving via ECR or NH32 through Chidambaram. Limited street parking is available near the temple entrance, so using local transport is recommended.

For accommodation, several budget lodges are available in Sirkazhi town, while more options can be found in Mayiladuthurai and Chidambaram, both about 20 km away. Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as Vaithiswaran Koil Temple (8 km), Poompuhar (20 km), Chidambaram Nataraja Temple (25 km), and Tharangambadi (30 km). Please note that photography is strictly prohibited inside the main shrine areas and camera usage is generally not allowed within the temple premises.
