Vadakkunnathan Temple

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, this temple is a prominent ASI-protected monument and holds UNESCO World Heritage status. The temple is situated in the heart of Thrissur city at Swaraj Round North, Thekkinkadu Maidan, making it easily accessible for devotees and visitors.

The temple showcases classic Kerala architecture, with intricate wooden carvings and monumental gopurams. Within its sacred precincts, devotees can also offer prayers to other deities such as Lord Rama, Shankaranarayana, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Rishabha, and Lord Ayyappa.

The temple’s spiritual ambiance is heightened by poojas conducted in Sanskrit and Malayalam, preserving the region’s traditional rituals. Vadakkunnathan Temple opens its doors for darshan from 4:00 AM to 11:00 AM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Free darshan is available for all visitors.

The best times to visit are early mornings between 5–8 AM, during the morning hours until noon, or in the evening during aarti. The winter months from November to February and the festival season are particularly popular among pilgrims.

A range of daily poojas are performed, starting with Nadathurappu (Opening of sanctum) at 4:00 AM, followed by Neyyattam (Ghee Abhishekam) at 4:15 AM, Usha Pooja at 6:00–6:30 AM, Ucha Pooja at 9:00–9:45 AM, Deeparadhana at 6:15 PM, Athazha Pooja at 7:15–7:45 PM, and Trippuka at 8:00–8:20 PM.

Special poojas such as Thrikala Pooja, Sreerudhradaara, Udhyasthamana Pooja, and Annadhanam are also available, with specific charges for each. Prasadam includes ghee from the main sanctum, Appam, and Neypayasam, and Annadanam is offered during festivals and on donor-sponsored days.

Major festivals celebrated here include Thrissur Pooram (April–May), Maha Shivaratri (February–March), and Aanayoottu, the Elephant Feeding Ceremony (July).

The temple enforces a strict dress code: men must wear a traditional mundu or dhoti and remain bare-chested past the outer perimeter, while women are required to wear saree, salwar kameez with dupatta, or Kerala set mundu.

Reaching Vadakkunnathan Temple is convenient: arrive in Thrissur city by train, bus, or car, head to Swaraj Round (Thekkinkadu Maidan), and walk through the open maidan pathways to the temple entrance.
