About

Thiruvilwamala Vilwadrinatha Temple, also known locally as Vilwadrinatha Temple or Sree Vilwadrinatha Kshetram, is a revered hill temple situated atop Vilwadrimala hill on Temple Road in Thiruvilwamala, Thrissur district, Kerala.

This ancient pilgrimage centre is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as the primary deity, with sanctums also for Lord Lakshmana, Lord Hanuman, Lord Ganapathy, Lord Ayyappa, Sridevi, Bhoodevi, Goddess Parvathi, Goddess Saraswati, and the serpent deities.

The temple is renowned for its Kerala-style architecture and continues to serve as a living heritage temple managed by a local trust.

Devotees can experience darshan through free entry, with the temple open from 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:00 or 9:00 PM, remaining closed in the afternoon. The best time to visit is during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), evening aarti, or the vibrant festival season.

Poojas are conducted in both Sanskrit and Malayalam, and the daily rituals include Nirmalya Darshanam (4:00/5:00 AM), Malar Nivedhyam (5:00–5:30 AM), Usha Nivedhyam/Ushapooja (6:20 AM), Ethirettupooja & Mahaganapathy Homam (around sunrise), Pantheeradi Pooja (8:00–8:20 AM), Ucha Nivedhyam/Uchapooja (10:20–11:00 AM), Deeparadhana (6:15 PM), and Athazha Pooja in the evening.

The temple observes several important festivals, including the Niramala Festival in September (Malayalam month of Kanni), Thiruvilwamala Ekadasi/Guruvayur Ekadasi in November/December (Vrischikam), and Thiruvilwamala Ekadasi (Kumbham) in February/March.

Signature prasadams like Neypayasam and Palpayasam are offered, and free annadanam is organized during special festival days.

Visitors are required to follow a traditional dress code: men must wear a mundu (dhoti) and remove shirts, t-shirts, vests, and trousers before entering the inner sanctum, remaining bare-chested in the core enclosure.

Women should wear a saree, set mundu, or salwar kameez/churidar with dupatta, avoiding revealing or sleeveless attire. Reaching the temple is convenient via nearby railway stations such as Lakkidi (3.5 km), Ottapalam (11.6 km), Shoranur Junction (20 km), and Thrissur (50 km).

The nearest airports are Cochin International Airport (64 km), Calicut International Airport (69 km), and Coimbatore International Airport (74 km). From major towns, buses connect to Thiruvilwamala Junction, from where the temple is 1–1.5 km uphill, accessible by auto-rickshaw or on foot.

Free parking is available at the base, though access to the shrine involves climbing stone steps, which may be challenging for the elderly or differently-abled.

Accommodation options include Hotel Royal Residency Park and Anamala Serenity Homestays in Thiruvilwamala, Eco Garden Resort (9 km away), and larger hotels in Thrissur or Shoranur.

Nearby attractions include Parakkottukavu Temple, Ivormadom Sreekrishna Temple, Punarjani Guha, Kuthampully Handloom Village, Kerala Kalamandalam, and Vazhani Dam. For more information, visit the official website or contact the temple directly.

Photography and mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside the sanctum and core premises. Online darshan booking is available through the temple’s website.
