About

Sri Tataiahgunta Gangamma Temple, also known locally as Tatayyagunta Gangamma Temple or Thathaya Gunta Gangamma, is a revered pilgrimage centre and ancient village temple dedicated to Goddess Shakti (Amman) in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.

Popularly referred to as the “Temple of the town’s protecting Mother” and the Gramadevata Temple, it stands in the Tataiah Gunta / Tata Nagar / Korramenugunta area, making it easily accessible for devotees and pilgrims visiting the region.

The temple is renowned for its vibrant spiritual atmosphere and is considered a living heritage temple, managed by a panchayat or local trust. While the exact historical period is unknown or disputed, tradition attributes its construction to Tirumala Thathacharyulu, a 16th-century devotee.

The temple’s architecture style is unique and distinct from the typical Dravidian or Nagara forms, reflecting the local traditions and customs of Tirupati.

Sri Tataiahgunta Gangamma Temple is open for darshan on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from 5:00 AM to 9:30 PM, and on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

The best time to visit is early morning between 5–8 AM, during the winter months of November to February, or in the festival season.

The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are expected to wear dhoti or kurta-pyjama, while women are encouraged to wear saree or salwar kameez/churidar with dupatta or pallu. Shorts and tight western outfits are discouraged.

Darshan options include free entry and special darshan tickets priced at ₹20 and ₹50.

Devotees can participate in a variety of poojas such as Archana, Pongali Taligaradhana, Vahana Pooja for vehicles, Abhishekam (Tuesdays, Fridays, Sundays 7:00–8:00 AM), Kumkum Archana (Fridays 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM), Chandi Homam (every Pournami 9:00–11:30 AM), and daily Alankarana Seva Darshan at 10:30 AM.

Poojas are conducted in Telugu and Sanskrit. The temple is most celebrated for its annual Gangamma Jatara held in May and for Navaratri & Vijayadasami in September-October.

On auspicious days and during major festivals, devotees receive prasadam such as sweet Pongal, Kumkum, and Vibhuthi, and annadanam is organized. Reaching the temple is convenient, with Tirupati Main Railway Station just 2 km away and Tirupati Airport (Renigunta) at a distance of 15 km.

The temple is a short 5–10 minute drive or walk from the central bus stand and railway station, with local auto-rickshaws, taxis, and town buses serving the area. Wheelchair-accessible parking is available but may be congested during peak hours.

Numerous budget and mid-range hotels, as well as TTD guest houses, are located within 1–3 km, including Sreeram Grand and Olive Nest Hotel.

Nearby attractions include Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple, Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple, Sri Kapileswara Swamy Temple, Chandragiri Fort, Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park, and the world-famous Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main temple, though casual photos may be allowed in outer corridors during less crowded times.
