About

Nageshwarnath Temple, also known locally as Nageshwar Nath Mandir or Nageshwar Nath Mahadev, is a revered ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.

Situated on the banks of the Sarayu River at Ram Ki Paidi, near Theri Bazaar, this temple is a significant pilgrimage centre and a prominent riverbank shrine, drawing devotees and visitors throughout the year.

The temple is renowned for its Nagara (North Indian) architectural style and is recognized as a living heritage temple. The main sanctum enshrines Lord Shiva, with Nandi also venerated within the complex.

The temple’s historical origins are associated with Kush, son of Lord Rama, while the current structure is attributed to Naval Rai, minister of Safdar Jung, dating back to around 1750.

Despite the historical period being unknown or disputed, the temple continues to be a focal point for spiritual activities and rituals. Nageshwarnath Temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM, offering free darshan to all devotees.

The best times to visit are early mornings between 5 and 8 AM, during the evening aarti, in the winter months (November to February), and throughout the festival season. The temple observes a traditional dress code, recommending modest attire that covers shoulders and knees for both men and women.

Daily poojas at the temple include the Morning Aarti from 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM, Shiva Abhishek from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM, and the Evening Aarti from 8:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Rituals and prayers are conducted in Hindi and Sanskrit.

Major festivals celebrated here include Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Trayodashi (Pradosh Vrat) every lunar fortnight, and Nag Panchami (July–August), when the temple comes alive with special community offerings and vibrant festivities. Reaching Nageshwarnath Temple is convenient.

From Ayodhya Dham Junction (AY), which is just 2.5 km away, or Ayodhya Cantt (AYC), about 9 km away, visitors can hire auto-rickshaws or taxis. The temple is a short walk from Ram Ki Paidi, with parking available in designated areas nearby, though the immediate vicinity is pedestrian-only.

The main sanctum is accessible via steps, with limited wheelchair access. Accommodation options abound near Ram Ki Paidi and Theri Bazaar, ranging from dharamshalas and budget dormitories near Ram Janmabhoomi to hotels like The Ramayana Hotel and Royal Heritage Hotel & Resort.

Nearby attractions include Ram Ki Paidi, Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, Hanuman Garhi, Naya Sarayu Ghat, and Lata Mangeshkar Chowk. Photography is allowed in the outer courtyard but prohibited inside the inner sanctum, and electronic devices may be restricted during aarti times. Flowers, bel leaves, and fruits are offered as prasad, especially during festivals.
