Karila Mata Temple (Jankiji Temple)

This ancient temple, dedicated to Goddess Shakti (Amman), is a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings. The temple complex also features shrines for Luv, Kush, and Maharishi Valmiki, adding to its spiritual importance.

The temple is renowned for its Nagara (North Indian) architectural style and is locally referred to as Janki Mata Mandir or Kareela. Pilgrims and visitors are welcomed daily, with temple timings from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

The best times to visit are early in the morning between 5–8 AM, during the evening aarti, or in the vibrant festival season. The temple conducts daily poojas, with Morning Aarti at 6:30 AM and Evening Aarti at 6:30 PM, both performed in Hindi.

Free darshan is available for all visitors, ensuring easy access to the divine. Karila Mata Temple becomes especially lively during major festivals.

The Karila Mela, celebrated five days after Holi during Rang Panchami in March, draws large crowds for its festive atmosphere and free mass-feeding (bhandara).

Navratri is observed twice a year, in Chaitra (March–April) and Ashwin (September–October), making these periods particularly auspicious for a visit. Traditional sweets and local prasadam are distributed, enhancing the spiritual experience. Reaching the temple is convenient via road or rail.

Pilgrims can arrive at Ashoknagar or Mungaoli, then take the Mungaoli tehsil road to Karila village, approximately 35 km from Ashoknagar. Local auto-rickshaws, shared jeeps, or taxis are available to reach the base of the hill, from where devotees ascend to the temple.

The nearest railway stations are Mungaoli (30 km), Ashok Nagar (35 km), and Bina Junction (39 km). For those traveling by air, Raja Bhoj International Airport in Bhopal (180 km) and Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Airport in Gwalior (235 km) are the closest options.

Accommodation is available in budget hotels and guesthouses in Ashoknagar and Mungaoli, as well as basic pilgrim rest houses. The Shri Anandpur Trust Ashram, located 15 km away, is another nearby option.

Visitors can also explore nearby attractions such as Thubonji Siddh Kshetra, Tumen’s Mata Vindhyavasini temple, and the historic town of Chanderi. The temple provides basic open-air free parking near the foothills, though it can become congested during festivals.

There is ramp and wheelchair access at the entrance, but assistance may be needed due to the hill terrain. Photography is permitted in the outer courtyards and hill surroundings, while restrictions apply inside the sanctum during rituals. Modest traditional attire is recommended for both men and women to maintain the sanctity of this sacred site.
