Bimala Temple (Shakti Peeth)

This temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti, worshipped here as Bimala or Vimala, and is considered one of the significant Shakti Peethas in India. The temple also houses shrines to Ganesha, Kartikeya, and Lord Jagannath (as consort), making it a spiritually rich destination for devotees.

Situated in the south-west corner of the Jagannath Temple courtyard, near Rohini Kunda and accessible from Grand Road/Bali Sahi area, Bimala Temple is an excellent example of Kalinga architecture.

Its heritage status is recognized by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and the temple has a long history of patronage and reconstruction by rulers such as Yayati Keshari of the Somavamshi dynasty, as well as the Eastern Ganga and Gajapati dynasties.

Devotees can visit the temple from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with timings sometimes extending to 11:30 PM after final rituals. The best time for darshan is early morning between 5 and 8 AM, during the winter months of November to February, or throughout the festival season.

The temple observes a strict dress code: men are required to wear traditional Indian attire such as dhoti and kurta or full-length trousers with a modest shirt, while women should wear saree, salwar kameez, or a long modest skirt with a covered upper body.

Shorts, sleeveless shirts, and ripped jeans are not permitted. Darshan at Bimala Temple is free of charge.

Daily poojas include the Morning Aarti (Kapoor Aarti) at 6:00 AM, Mangal Aarti at 6:30 AM, Sandhya Aarti (Evening) at 6:00 PM, and Sleeping Aarti (Pahuda/Night closing) at 9:00 PM, all conducted in Sanskrit.

The temple is especially vibrant during Durga Puja/Navaratri, celebrated in September-October. To reach Bimala Temple, arrive in Puri by train or road. From the railway station or bus stand, take an auto-rickshaw, e-rickshaw, or taxi to Singhadwar (Lion's Gate) on Grand Road.

After depositing mobile phones and cameras at the cloakrooms, enter through Singhadwar, climb the 22 steps (Baisi Pahacha), and proceed to the south-western corner near Rohini Kunda.

Puri Railway Station is just 3 km away, while Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar is 60 km from the temple. Pilgrims can stay at guesthouses like Jagannath Ballav Bhakta Niwas and Neeladri Bhakta Niwas, or opt for OTDC Panthanivas and private hotels along Grand Road and Swargadwar.

Nearby attractions include Shree Jagannath Temple, Narendra Tank, Gundicha Temple, Puri Beach, Konark Sun Temple, and Chilika Lake. All Mahaprasad cooked for Lord Jagannath is first offered to Goddess Bimala before being distributed to devotees.
