About

The Konark Sun Temple, also known locally as Surya Devalaya, Surya Deula, and The Black Pagoda, is an iconic ancient temple and UNESCO World Heritage site located near the Bay of Bengal coast in Konark, Puri district, Odisha.

Renowned for its magnificent Kalinga architectural style, this ASI-protected monument stands as a major pilgrimage centre and a testament to the artistic and spiritual heritage of India.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Surya, the temple complex also features depictions of other deities such as Mayadevi, Narayana, Trivikrama, Rama, guardian deities, and celestial beings.

Built by King Narasingha Deva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty, the temple’s historical period is considered unknown or disputed, adding to its aura of mystery and grandeur. The temple welcomes visitors daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, offering both free and special darshan options.

There is no strict dress code, but modest and comfortable clothing is recommended for both men and women.

For pilgrims and tourists, the best time to visit the Konark Sun Temple is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the early morning hours between 5 and 8 AM, when the temple’s intricate stone carvings are beautifully illuminated by the soft sunlight.

Konark Sun Temple is a vibrant hub during festivals such as Ratha Saptami (Magha Saptami) in January-February, the Konark Dance Festival from December 1st to 5th, and the International Sand Art Festival in early December. These events attract devotees and art lovers from across India and the world.

Reaching the temple is convenient, with clear directions from major cities. From Bhubaneswar, it is about 65 km via Pipili and Delanga, taking 1.5 to 2 hours by taxi or bus.

From Puri, the temple is approximately 35 km along Marine Drive Road, accessible in 45 to 60 minutes by taxi, auto-rickshaw, or bus. The nearest railway stations are Puri (35 km), Khurda Road Junction (60 km), and Bhubaneswar (65 km).

The closest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport, 65 km away. For accommodation, visitors can choose from OTDC Yatrinivas just 400 meters from the temple, Holiday Inn Konark, or Lotus Eco Beach Resort, a 15–20 minute drive away.

Parking is available in a paid public lot about 1 km from the entrance, with wheelchair-accessible routes provided. Photography is allowed in the exterior complex for personal use, while professional shoots require ASI permission.

Nearby attractions include Chandrabhaga Beach (3 km), the Archaeological Museum (1 km), Ramachandi Temple & Beach (7 km), and Astaranga Beach (19 km), making Konark an ideal destination for spiritual seekers and cultural enthusiasts alike. For more information, visitors can refer to the official website or contact the temple administration directly.
