Bhojeshwar Temple (Bhojpur Shiva Temple)

This ASI-protected monument stands atop a hillock overlooking the Betwa River and is renowned for its unique mixed and renovated architectural style.

Sometimes referred to as the “Unfinished Temple of Bhojpur,” it draws pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike for its spiritual ambiance and architectural significance. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, making it accessible for devotees seeking darshan and personal worship.

Free darshan is available to all visitors, and the temple encourages traditional attire: men are expected to wear kurta-pyjama or modest trousers and shirts, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or long skirts and kurtis. Shoes must be removed before entering the inner compound.

Devotees can participate in personal worship rituals such as jalabhishek, offering water, milk, or bilva leaves to the Shiva lingam. Aartis are conducted three times daily—morning around 7:00 AM, midday at 12:00 PM, and evening at 7:00 PM—with rituals performed in Hindi and Sanskrit.

Bhojeshwar Temple becomes especially vibrant during Maha Shivaratri (February-March) and Sawan Somwar (Shravan Mondays in July-August), when pilgrims gather in large numbers.

The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February or in the early morning hours between 5:00 and 8:00 AM, when the temple’s serene setting is most enchanting.

For those traveling from Bhopal, the temple is about a 45–60 minute drive via Hoshangabad Road or Mandideep route, with clear directions leading through Obaidullaganj and rural roads to Bhojpur village.

Designated parking is available near the entrance for a nominal fee, and a side pathway or wooden ramp assists visitors with mobility challenges. The nearest railway stations are Mandi Dip (15 km), Habibganj (22 km), and Bhopal Junction (28 km).

Raja Bhoj Airport in Bhopal is 28 km away, and Indore Airport is 200 km distant. While Bhojpur itself has limited lodging, most visitors stay in Bhopal, which offers a range of hotels and guesthouses.

Nearby attractions include the Cyclopean Dam Remains, Jain Temple Bhojpur, Bhimbetka rock shelters, and Raisen Fort. Photography is permitted throughout the temple, though professional setups may require permission.
