Ahilyeshwar Temple Maheshwar

Nestled within the historic Maheshwar Fort complex near Ahilya Ghat, this temple is a revered destination for devotees of Lord Shiva and admirers of North Indian Nagara architecture.

Commissioned during the British colonial era by Maharani Krishnabai Holkar as a tribute to Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar, the temple is celebrated for its intricate stonework and spiritual ambiance.

Alongside the primary deity, Lord Shiva, the temple houses shrines dedicated to the Dashavatara—the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu—and various other Hindu gods and goddesses. A statue of Ahilyabai Holkar herself is also present, reflecting the temple’s royal heritage and historical significance.

The temple welcomes visitors daily from 7:00 AM to 6:30 PM, with free darshan available for all. Devotees can participate in several poojas, including the Morning Aarti at 8:00 AM, Evening Aarti at 6:00 PM, and the Narmada Aarti at Ahilya Ghat at 8:00 PM.

Special rituals such as Shiva Panchamrit Abhishek and Archana are also performed, with poojas conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi.

After the aartis, standard prasadam—comprising sugar crystals, dry fruits, and charnamrit—is distributed, and community annadanam (bhandaras) takes place during major festivals.
