Walkeshwar Temple (Banganga)

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, this temple complex is also home to shrines for Parashurama, Venkateshwar Balaji, Rameshwar, Lord Hanuman, Lord Ganesha, and Rama-Lakshmi-Narayan, making it a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan of multiple deities.

The temple is recognized as a state heritage and living heritage temple, with a history linked to Lakshman Prabhu of the Silhara Dynasty and subsequent rebuilding by Rama Kamath. Its architecture is a blend of ancient and renovated styles, reflecting the temple’s enduring cultural significance.

Located in the heart of Mumbai’s Malabar Hill, the temple is easily accessible from Grant Road Railway Station (1.2 km) and Charni Road Railway Station (3.5 km), while Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is approximately 19.3 km away.

Visitors are advised to use public transport or taxis, as parking is extremely limited and there is no dedicated lot. Some ramps and e-cars are available for mild mobility support.

Walkeshwar Temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the best time to visit being early mornings (5–8 AM), during evening aarti, in winter (November to February), or during festival seasons such as Maha Shivaratri, Shravan Maas, Banganga Festival, Dev Diwali, and Pitru Paksha.

Free darshan is available for all devotees, and the temple maintains a modest dress code: men should wear full-length trousers or jeans with shirts or kurtas, while women are expected to wear traditional or modest western attire covering shoulders and knees.

Footwear must be removed before entering the inner sanctum. The temple conducts daily poojas, including Morning Aarti (7:00–7:30 AM), Evening Aarti (7:00–7:30 PM), Shej Aarti (9:00–9:30 PM), and Rudrabhishek/Laghurudra, performed in Sanskrit, Marathi, and Hindi.

Prasadam such as vibhuti, kumkum, flowers, and small portions of sugar or fruit is distributed during aartis, and free annadanam is organized on special occasions and festivals.

To reach the temple, arrive in South Mumbai, head toward Malabar Hill via Walkeshwar Road, reach Teen Batti junction, turn onto Banganga Cross Lane, and walk down the stone pathway to the temple complex.
