Mumbadevi Temple

Dedicated to Goddess Shakti, also known locally as Mumba Aai, Maha Amba, and Mumbapuri, this temple holds immense spiritual significance for devotees across the city and beyond.

The temple also enshrines other deities such as Shri Annapurna, Shri Jagadamba, and Shri Hanumanji, making it a vibrant center for worship and devotion. The temple showcases the Nagara (North Indian) architectural style and stands as a living heritage temple, managed by a local panchayat trust.

Its origins trace back to the British colonial era, with the original shrine built by the local Koli fishermen and later reconstructed by the community in 1737. The temple is renowned for its spiritual atmosphere and the continuous flow of pilgrims seeking blessings and darshan.

Mumbadevi Temple is open for darshan from Tuesday to Sunday, between 6:30 AM and 9:00 PM, and remains closed on Mondays except during festivals.

The best times to visit are early mornings (5–8 AM), during evening aarti, in the winter months from November to February, and throughout the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Chaitra Navratri, Magh Navratri, Aashad Navratri, Ashvin Navratri, Mumbadevi Vardhapan Din (Patotsav), Shree Mumbadevi Annakut Mohotsav, and the Mango Festival, each drawing large gatherings of devotees.

Devotees can choose from free, special, or VIP darshan, with nominal fees for the latter two.

Several poojas are performed in Sanskrit, Hindi, and Marathi, including Shree Kumkum Archan, Shree Kapoor Aarti, Shree Mataji Abhishek, Nav Vivahit Puja, and elaborate rituals like Shree Navchandi Yagnya Puja and Shree Wadi Puja.

Prasadam, such as traditional milk sweets, sacred flowers, kumkum, and turmeric, is distributed, and Annadanam is organized during major festivals.

Visitors are expected to adhere to the temple’s dress code: men should wear traditional or formal attire, while women are required to dress modestly in saree, salwar kameez, or equivalent attire.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the temple, and mobile phones must be switched off or put away.

Reaching Mumbadevi Temple is convenient via South Mumbai’s local trains, metro, or taxis, with nearby stations including Masjid Bunder (0.7 km), Marine Lines (1.4 km), Charni Road (1.5 km), and CSMT (2 km).

The area is crowded with narrow lanes, so parking is discouraged; visitors are advised to use paid parking lots further away and walk or take a taxi. Accommodation options such as Hotel New Bengal, The Sahil Hotel, Residency Hotel Fort, and West End Hotel are available within 0.9–1.6 km.
