The temple’s origins trace back to the British colonial era, with the original shrine built by Ramji Shivji Prabhu in the 1780s and later expanded by Dhakji Dadaji in 1831. Its mixed and renovated architectural style reflects its long-standing heritage, and it is recognized as a state heritage site.

The temple’s seaside location offers a serene backdrop, attracting both pilgrims and tourists. Mahalakshmi Temple Mumbai welcomes visitors with free darshan and is open from Wednesday to Monday between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM, and on Tuesdays from 3:15 AM to 12:00 PM.

Daily poojas are conducted in Sanskrit, Hindi, Marathi, and English, including the Morning Main Aarti (7:00 AM - 7:20 AM), Afternoon Naivedya (12:00 PM), Evening Dhoop Aarti (6:00 PM - 6:40 PM), Evening Main Aarti (7:30 PM - 7:50 PM), and Night Shejarati (10:00 PM).

Major festivals celebrated here include Sharad Navratri (September-October), Chaitra Navratri (March-April), Diwali (Lakshmi Pujan), Margashirsha Month Observances, weekly Friday observances, and Full Moon (Purnima) Abhishek.

Reaching the temple is convenient: take a Churchgate-bound local train (Western Line) and alight at Mahalakshmi Station, then walk or take a taxi for 1.1 km. BEST buses towards Haji Ali or Tardeo stop at the Mahalakshmi Temple bus stop, and taxis can drop you directly at the entrance.

Nearby railway stations include Mahalakshmi, Mumbai Central, and Byculla, while the nearest airports are Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) and Juhu Aerodrome.

On-site parking is extremely limited, but multi-level parking and pay-and-park options are available within 300-400 meters. The temple provides wheelchair-accessible entrances and assistance for senior citizens and differently-abled visitors.

Photography is strictly prohibited near the main idols and inside the sanctum, but casual photography is allowed in the outer courtyard. Prasadam such as sweets, flowers, kumkum, and dry packets is distributed, with naivedya offered and shared as prasad.
