About

Velankanni Basilica, also known by several local names such as the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, Velankanni Matha Church, and Sanctuary of Our Lady of Velankanni, stands as a renowned pilgrimage centre on the scenic coastal area along the Bay of Bengal in Velankanni, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu.

Revered as the “Lourdes of the East,” this ancient and seaside shrine attracts millions of devotees and visitors each year, offering a serene spiritual atmosphere and a unique blend of faith and tradition.

The primary focus of worship at Velankanni Basilica is Jesus Christ, along with various Catholic saints.

The basilica’s architecture, while distinctive, does not conform to any single traditional style, reflecting its long history and the influence of Portuguese sailors who originally built the shrine, later expanded over time.

The basilica holds the status of a living heritage temple, welcoming pilgrims from across India and abroad. Darshan at Velankanni Basilica is open to all, with free entry for devotees.

The shrine operates daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, making early mornings between 5 and 8 AM especially tranquil for prayer and reflection. The winter months from November to February and the vibrant festival season are considered the best times to visit.

The annual festival, the Feast of Our Lady of Health, is celebrated from August 29 to September 8, drawing large crowds. Other significant occasions include Holy Week (March-April) and Christmas in December.

The basilica conducts Holy Mass multiple times daily, from 5:40 AM to 12:00 PM and again in the evening, with services offered in English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Marathi.

Pilgrims are expected to follow a modest dress code: men should wear trousers or pants with shirts and avoid shorts or sleeveless vests, while women are advised to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or long skirts/dresses, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.

Reaching Velankanni is convenient, with Velankanni Railway Station (VLNK) just 1 km away and Nagapattinam Junction (NGT) at 12 km. Hourly SETC buses connect major cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore, and Madurai.

The nearest airports are Tiruchirappalli (165 km), Madurai (214 km), and Chennai (320 km), with pre-paid taxis available. Ample parking, wheelchair-accessible entrances, and parking facilities ensure ease of access for all visitors.

Accommodation options include pilgrim homes and cottages managed by the shrine, as well as private hotels and guest houses within walking distance.

Nearby attractions such as Velankanni Beach, the Vailankanni Shrine Museum, Morning Star Church, Nagore Dargah, and Karaikal Beach offer additional experiences for visitors. Blessed candles and items are given as prasadam, and charity meals (annadanam) are provided during the annual festival.

Photography is permitted in outdoor areas, but strictly prohibited inside the main church during mass. For more details, pilgrims can visit the official website or contact the shrine directly.
