About

Sittannavasal Cave Temple, also known locally as Arivar Koil or Chithannavasal, is an ancient rock-cut Jain monument located in Sittannavasal, Pudukkottai district, Tamil Nadu.

This remarkable cave temple, set atop a hill, is a significant heritage site recognized as an ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) protected monument.

The temple is renowned for its rock-cut architecture, dating back to the Pandya period, and was built by Jain monks under the patronage of the Pandyan kings.

Dedicated to Jain Tirthankaras, with Lord Mahavira among the revered deities, Sittannavasal Cave Temple is a spiritual destination for those interested in Jain heritage and ancient Indian art.

The temple’s interiors are adorned with exquisite frescoes, although visitors should note that photography inside the main cave is sometimes restricted, and flash photography is strictly prohibited to preserve these delicate artworks.

Photography is permitted outside the cave, allowing visitors to capture the scenic beauty of the hill and its surroundings.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the best time to visit being early morning between 5 and 8 AM or during the winter months from November to February for a comfortable experience.

Modest clothing is recommended for both men and women, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered during your visit. Darshan at Sittannavasal Cave Temple is accessible through a free entry, with a nominal fee of INR 20.

Reaching the temple is convenient from nearby towns: from Pudukkottai, take the Annavasal road and follow signs to Sittannavasal (approximately 16-17 km). From Tiruchirappalli, take NH336 to Pudukkottai and then proceed to Sittannavasal (about 47-50 km).

The fastest way is by taxi from Pudukkottai, which takes around 17-20 minutes. Pudukkottai Railway Station is the nearest railhead, just 14 km away, and Tiruchirappalli International Airport is about 47 km from the site.

There is a dedicated parking area at the entrance, but visitors should be prepared for a moderate walk and a steep uphill path to the cave, which may be less accessible for the elderly or those with mobility challenges.

Accommodation options are available in Pudukkottai town, a short 15-20 minute drive away, while facilities near the cave itself are limited. Nearby attractions include the natural cavern Eladipattam, Navachunai Temple, Sittanavasal Boat House, and the Pudukkottai Museum & Palace, located 16 km away.
