About

Murugan Temple Viralimalai, also known locally as Viralimalai Subramanya Swamy Temple or Viralimalai Murugan Temple, is an ancient hill temple and prominent pilgrimage centre situated atop a hillock in the heart of Viralimalai town, Pudukkottai district, Tamil Nadu.

Revered for its Dravidian architecture and historical significance dating back to the Chola period, the temple is an ASI-protected monument, with its original structure attributed to the Early Cholas and later enhancements by the Nayaks and subsequent rulers.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, with shrines for Valli and Deivanai, as well as various forms of Shiva, Parvati, and the Navagraha.

Devotees can participate in a range of traditional poojas, including daily pujas performed six times a day as per Kamika Agamam, Ear Boring (Mudi Kanikkai), carrying Kavadi, carrying milk pots (Paal Kudam), tonsuring, and Anga Pradakshinam.

All rituals are conducted in Tamil, maintaining the temple’s cultural authenticity. Darshan at Murugan Temple Viralimalai is accessible to all, with options for free darshan and a Seeghra (quick) darshan available for a nominal fee of ₹10.

The temple is open from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, making early mornings, late mornings, and evening aarti times especially auspicious for visits.

The winter months from November to February and the festival season are considered the best times to experience the temple’s vibrant spiritual atmosphere.

Major festivals celebrated here include Thaipusam (January–February), Skanda Sashti (October–November), Panguni Uthiram (March–April), Adikrittikai, and Vaikasi Visakam.

Visitors are requested to adhere to the temple’s dress code: men should wear dhotis (veshti) with shirts or formal trousers with shirts, avoiding shorts or lungis; women are expected to wear sarees, churidars, or salwars with dupatta, avoiding short skirts, tight jeans, or revealing clothing.

The temple is easily accessible from Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), located about 30 km away via NH 38/NH 45B, with frequent buses passing through Viralimalai. It is also reachable from Pudukkottai (40–42 km) and Madurai (100–110 km).

The Viralimalai Railway Station and Tiruchirappalli Junction (TPJ) are the nearest railway stations, while Tiruchirappalli International Airport (TRZ) is about 30 km away.

Upon arrival at Viralimalai, the temple is within walking distance from the bus stand; devotees can climb approximately 165–207 steep steps or use the jeep road to reach the hilltop. Limited parking is available at the base.

Daily prasadams are offered, and devotees often bring fruits and milk as offerings. While there is no explicit mention of free Annadanam, the temple maintains a tradition of prasadam distribution.

Photography is permitted outside the temple and in the peacock sanctuary, but strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum. For those planning an extended visit, limited small private lodges are available in Viralimalai, while a wider range of hotels and guest houses can be found in Trichy.

Nearby attractions include the Viralimalai Peacock Sanctuary, Viralimalai Murugan Temple Tank, Kodumbalur’s ancient temples, and Jothi Theatre. For further inquiries, devotees may contact the temple at 07667565356.
