About

Bhagavathy Amman Temple Kanyakumari, also known locally as Kumari Amman Temple, Sarvani Shaktipeeth Shri Kanya Kumari Bhagavathy Amman Temple, and Devi Kumari, is a revered pilgrimage centre situated on the southern coast of Tamil Nadu.

This ancient seaside temple is dedicated to Goddess Shakti, also referred to as Amman, and stands as a prominent Shakti Peetha.

The temple’s sacred location is near the iconic Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Thiruvalluvar Statue, making it a spiritual and cultural landmark in Kanyakumari.

The temple’s architecture features the classic Dravidian style, and its sanctum is a place of deep devotion for thousands of pilgrims each year. In addition to the main deity, Goddess Shakti, devotees can also offer prayers to other deities such as Lord Surya Deva, Lord Ganesha, Lord Ayyappa, Goddess Bala Sundari, and Goddess Vijaya Sundari within the temple complex.

Bhagavathy Amman Temple is open for darshan from 4:30 AM to 12:30 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM, allowing devotees to plan their visit during the tranquil morning hours or the serene evening aarti time. The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the morning or during the evening rituals. For darshan, both free and special entry options are available, with a nominal fee of INR 20 for special darshan.

A strict traditional dress code is enforced: men are required to be bare-chested and wear a dhoti or mundu, while women must wear sarees or churidars and dress modestly. Mobile phones, cameras, and electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside the main shrine area, but a bag/mobile counter is available for depositing personal items before entry.

Reaching the temple is convenient, with the Kanyakumari Railway Station located nearby and Nagercoil Junction about 18 km away. Trivandrum International Airport is the closest airport at 85 km distance. Visitors can arrive at the Kanyakumari Bus Stand or Railway Station and take an auto-rickshaw or taxi to the Amman Kovil or Temple Junction; the temple is within walking distance of the main beach and the ferry to Vivekananda Rock.

Accommodation options are plentiful, with many hotels, guest houses, and TTDC hotels within walking distance, as well as premium resorts along the coast. The temple administration also offers affordable lodging nearby. Limited street parking is available, but it is recommended to use main tourist parking areas near the beach and walk to the temple due to narrow streets.

Nearby attractions include Vivekananda Rock Memorial, Thiruvalluvar Statue, Kanyakumari Beach (Sangam), Gandhi Mandapam, Sunset View Point, Suchindram Temple, and Kovalam Beach, making Bhagavathy Amman Temple an essential part of any pilgrimage or sightseeing itinerary in Kanyakumari.
