Brihadeeswarar Temple

The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva, worshipped as Brihadeeswarar or Peruvudaiyar Lingam. The temple complex also houses shrines for other deities such as Nandi, Parvati, Murugan, Ganesha, Sabhapati, Dakshinamurti, Chandeshvara, Varahi, and Thiyagarajar, making it a spiritually enriching destination for devotees of various traditions. Brihadeeswarar Temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM, providing ample opportunity for darshan and participation in the temple’s vibrant rituals. The temple follows a traditional dress code: men are expected to wear formal pants, trousers, or dhoti with a shirt, while women are encouraged to wear sarees, churidars, or long skirts with blouses, avoiding tight or revealing clothing.

Devotees can attend several daily poojas conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit, including Kalasanthi (Morning Puja) at 8:00 AM, Palabhishekam at 8:30 AM, Uchikala Pooja (Noon Puja) at 12:00 PM, Sayaraksha (Evening Puja) at 6:00 PM, and Ardhajama (Night Puja) at 8:00 PM. Prasadam such as sweet pongal, rice, and vibhuti is distributed after poojas, and Annadanam is offered during major festivals and special occasions.

The temple celebrates important festivals like Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Brahan Natyanjali (February during Maha Shivaratri), Chithirai Festival (April-May), and Aippasi Thiruvizha (October-November). The best time to visit is early morning, during morning or evening aarti, in winter (November to February), or on weekdays for a less crowded experience.

Reaching the temple is convenient: it is just 2 km from Thanjavur Junction Railway Station (auto-rickshaw or taxi takes 5–10 minutes), 5 km from the New Bus Stand (city bus or taxi), and 60 km from Tiruchirappalli International Airport (about 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi). Ample parking is available near the entrance, and while most areas are accessible, the sanctum may lack wheelchair ramps.
