About

Nageswaran Temple, also known locally as Nageswaraswamy Temple, Nageswaran Kovil, and Kudanthai Keelkottam, is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Situated in Valayapettai Agraharam / Nageswaran North Street in the heart of Kumbakonam, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, this temple stands as a significant pilgrimage centre and a remarkable example of Chola architecture.

Built during the Chola period by Aditya Chola I, the temple attracts devotees and architecture enthusiasts alike with its historical grandeur and spiritual ambiance.

The main sanctum enshrines Lord Shiva, while the temple complex also houses shrines for Nageswari (Parvati), Ganesha, Murugan, Dakshinamurti, Ardhanari, Brahma, and Rahu. The temple is well-known for its daily rituals and special poojas.

Devotees can participate in Daily Archana for a nominal fee of ₹10, Abhishekam for ₹50, and the unique Milk Abishekam for Rahu Bhagawan, especially during Rahu Kaalam on Sundays. Rituals are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit, maintaining the traditional practices of the region.

Nageswaran Temple is open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM. Free darshan entry is available to all devotees.

The best times to visit include mornings between 8 AM and 12 PM, during evening aarti, annual brahmotsavam, festival seasons, and the pleasant winter months from November to February.

The temple observes a modest dress code: men are advised to wear dhotis or formal trousers, and women are recommended to wear sarees, churidars, or long skirts with blouses, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.

The temple celebrates several vibrant festivals, including Chithirai Festival (April-May), Brahmotsavam (March-April), Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Navaratri (September-October), Arudra Darshan (December-January), and the Mahamaham festival, which occurs every 12 years.

During special festival days or when sponsored by devotees, annadanam is provided, and prasadam such as vibhuti, kumkum, and occasionally milk-based sweets are distributed.

Reaching Nageswaran Temple is convenient: from Kumbakonam Railway Station, it is a short 1.5–2 km ride by auto or taxi, and only about 1 km from the Central Bus Stand. The temple is centrally located near Gandhi Adigal Salai and the Sarangapani Temple area.

Parking is available near the big tank, Haridra Nadhi. For accommodation, several mid-range and budget hotels are situated near the railway station and bus stand, with specialized stays available for Navagraha temple tours.

Photography is permitted in the outer precincts but not inside the main sanctum.

Nearby attractions include Arulmigu Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, Sri Sarangapani Swamy Temple, Thirunageswaram Rahu Temple, Oppiliappan Temple, Darashuram Airavatesvara Temple, and the renowned Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur. For further inquiries, devotees can contact the temple at +91-435-2430386.
