About

Thirunageswaram Rahu Temple, also known locally as Rahu Sthalam, Naganatha Swamy Temple, or Nageswaram, is a renowned ancient temple situated on the riverbank in Thirunageswaram, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, this temple is also home to shrines for Rahu with his consorts, Giri-Gujambigai (Parvati in penance), and Pirayani Amman (Parvati).

The temple stands as a significant pilgrimage centre, drawing devotees from across India, especially those seeking relief from astrological afflictions attributed to Rahu.

Constructed during the Chola period by Aditya Chola I, Thirunageswaram Rahu Temple is celebrated for its impressive Dravidian architecture.

The temple’s heritage status is recognized by the state, and its sprawling complex features intricately carved gopurams and spacious courtyards.

The temple is positioned conveniently near Kumbakonam, just 6 km away, and is accessible via Karaikal road.

Pilgrims can reach Thirunageswaram by auto-rickshaw or local bus from Kumbakonam bus stand or railway station.

Those traveling from Chennai can opt for a car journey via Villupuram and Kumbakonam, or take a bus from CMBT to Kumbakonam, followed by a local auto.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Early mornings, winter months (November to February), and festival seasons are considered the best times to visit.

Dress code guidelines require men to wear traditional attire such as dhoti, veshti, or trousers with a shirt, while women are expected to wear modest clothing like sarees, churidars, or salwar kameez.

Darshan options include free darshan, special darshan (INR 150), and seeghra darshan (INR 250).

Daily poojas are performed in Tamil, with rituals such as Ushakkala Pooja at 6:00 AM, Kalasandhi Pooja from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM, Uchikkala Pooja from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, Sayaraksha Pooja at 6:00 PM, and Ardhajama Pooja at 7:30 PM.

Major festivals celebrated here include Rahu Peyarchi (once every 1.5 years), Brahmotsavam in Karthigai (November/December), Kanda Shasti in Aippasi (October/November), and Navarathri in Purattasi (September/October).

The temple offers prasadam and milk from abhishekam, with special annadanam during festivals.

Photography is strictly regulated, with restrictions inside the main sanctum and near idols, though mobile phones are permitted in outer courtyards.
