About

Thiruvidaimarudur Mahalingeswarar Temple, also known by local names such as Mahalingeswarar Temple, Mahalingaswamy Temple, Madhyarjunar, Thiruvidai-marudhur, and Madhyarjuna Kshetram, is a renowned ancient temple and pilgrimage centre dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Situated in Thiruvidaimarudur town in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, this temple is celebrated for its Dravidian architecture and rich heritage, with origins tracing back to the Chola period.

The temple has seen significant contributions from the Early Cholas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara Kings, and Thanjavur Nayaks, making it a living heritage temple managed by a local trust.

Devotees visiting the Mahalingeswarar Temple can worship Lord Shiva as the primary deity, along with Bruhatsundarakuchaambika and Nandi. The temple is a vibrant spiritual hub, offering daily poojas in Tamil and Sanskrit.

Special poojas include Somavaram on Mondays, Sukravaram on Fridays, Pradosham on every 13th lunar day, Amavasai on new moon days, Kiruthigai, Pournami on full moon days, and Vishnupathi Pooja on the first days of Karthigai, Maasi, Vaigasi, and Aavani.

Major festivals celebrated here include Thaipoosam (January-February), Navaratri (September-October), Deepavali, Pongal, Tamil New Year (April), and English New Year (January). The temple is open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Entry options include free darshan, special darshan, and VIP darshan. The best time to visit is during winter (November to February), early mornings between 5–8 AM, or during evening aarti.

Traditional attire is required: men should wear dhotis or pyjamas with an upper cloth or formal pants and shirts, while women are expected to wear sarees, churidars, or salwar kameez. Reaching Thiruvidaimarudur Mahalingeswarar Temple is convenient.

Arrive at Kumbakonam by bus or train, then take a local bus bound for Mayiladuthurai or Peralam, or hire an auto or taxi from Kumbakonam Old Bus Stand or Railway Station. The temple is about 8–9 km from Kumbakonam and is centrally located in Thiruvidaimarudur, easily recognized by its large gopuram.
