About

Mahamaham Tank Temple, also known locally as Mahamaham Kulam or Mahamaha Teertham, is a revered pilgrimage centre and ancient riverbank temple situated in the heart of Kumbakonam, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu.

This temple holds immense spiritual significance for devotees of Lord Shiva, who is the primary deity worshipped here.

The temple complex is also home to several other deities, including Brammatheertheshwarar, Mukundeshwarar, Dhaneshwarar, Virushabeshwarar, Baaneshwarar, Koneshwarar, Bhakthikeshwarar, Bhairaveshwarar, Agasthyeshwarar, Vyaneshwarar, Umaibakeshwarar, Nairutheeshwarar, Brammeshwarar, Gangatheshwarar, Mukthatheertheshwarar, Shethrabaleshwarar, and the Nava Kannika (nine goddesses), making it a unique destination for those seeking darshan of multiple forms of divinity.

The temple is renowned for its Dravidian architecture and is recognized as a living heritage temple, reflecting its historical and cultural importance.

Built during the Nayak period by Govinda Dikshitar, the chieftain of Nayak king Raghunatha Nayak, the Mahamaham Tank Temple stands as a testament to the region’s rich architectural legacy.

Its proximity to the Kasi Viswanathar Temple and central location in Kumbakonam make it easily accessible for pilgrims and visitors. Devotees can visit the temple for darshan during the timings of 5:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Free darshan is available to all, and poojas are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit. The best time to visit is during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), evening aarti, festival season, or the winter months from November to February.

The temple is especially vibrant during the Mahamaham Festival, celebrated once every 12 years in February–March (Tamil month of Masi), and during Masimagam in the same period.

During the 10-day Mahamaham festival, large-scale Annadanam (free food) is organized by the state government and private trusts. Reaching the Mahamaham Tank Temple is convenient, with Kumbakonam Railway Station just 2 km away and Tiruchirappalli International Airport located 91 km from the temple.

Detailed directions are available for those traveling from Chennai, Trichy, or Thanjavur, with the temple being adjacent to the Kasi Viswanathar Temple and near the Kumbakonam bus stand.

Several hotels and homestays, such as Quality Inn VIHA, Raya’s Inn/Hotel Raya’s, and Sivamurugan Hotels, are available within 1–2 km for comfortable accommodation.

Visitors can also explore nearby attractions like Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, Sri Sarangapani Swamy Temple, Abimukeswarar Temple, Gowthameswarar Temple, Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, and the Navagraha Temples. For more information, darshan details, or to plan your visit, the temple’s official website and contact number are available for guidance.
