About

Sarangapani Temple, located in the heart of Kumbakonam city near the Kaveri River in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, stands as a revered pilgrimage centre and one of the prominent Divya Desams.

Known locally as Kumbakonam Koyil and Thirukudanthai, this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and features Goddess Komalavalli Thayar (Lakshmi) along with various avatars of Vishnu among its deities.

The temple’s majestic Dravidian architecture, dating back to the Chola period with later additions from the Vijayanagara Empire and Madurai Nayaks, marks it as a living heritage and a state heritage monument.

Devotees visiting Sarangapani Temple can experience darshan during the temple’s open hours: 7:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Both free darshan and special darshan (for a nominal fee of ₹10) are available. The temple conducts several poojas daily, including Thiruvanandal at 8:00 AM, Kaala Santhi at 9:00 AM, Uchi Kaalam at 12:30 PM, Nithiyanu Santhanam at 6:00 PM, and a second evening worship at 7:30 PM. Special poojas such as Abhishekam and Sahasranama Archana are also performed, with tickets available at different price points. Rituals are conducted in both Sanskrit and Tamil, ensuring a spiritually immersive experience for all devotees.

The best time to visit Sarangapani Temple is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the early morning or during the evening aarti. The temple is also vibrant during festival seasons, hosting grand celebrations like the Chithirai Chariot Festival (March-April), Vaikasi Vasantha Utsav (May-June), Masi Float Festival (February-March), Brahmotsavam, and Navaratri (September-October).

Visitors should adhere to the temple’s dress code: men are required to wear a dhoti with shirt or pyjama, while women should wear a saree, salwar kameez, or churidar with dupatta. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum sanctorum.

Reaching Sarangapani Temple is convenient—arrive in Kumbakonam by train or bus, then take an auto-rickshaw or taxi from the railway station (3 km) or bus stand (2 km) towards the city center or Big Bazaar Street. The temple is close to Chakrapani Temple and Potramarai Tank. For those traveling from afar, Tiruchirappalli International Airport is 90 km away and Chennai International Airport is 280 km away.

Accommodation is plentiful near Big Bazaar Street and the city center, with options like Hotel DSR Madhanam Residency and Jeyam Residency. Parking is available but can be crowded due to narrow streets; the temple’s central location makes it easily accessible by local transport. Prasadam offerings include Thulasi Theertham, Ven Pongal, and Dosai-Taligai, with annadanam provided occasionally.

Nearby attractions include Chakrapani Swami Temple, Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, Potramarai Tank, Airavatesvara Temple at Dharasuram, Oppiliappan Temple, and the renowned Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, making Sarangapani Temple a central part of any spiritual journey in Kumbakonam.
