About

Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple, also known locally as Thanumalayan Temple, Sthanumalayan Temple, or Suchindram Temple, stands as a prominent ancient temple and pilgrimage centre in the town of Suchindram, Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu.

Renowned for its exquisite Dravidian architecture, this temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva and also enshrines Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, Lord Hanuman, Nandi, Vinayaka, and Devayanai, making it unique for devotees seeking darshan of multiple deities in one sacred space.

The temple’s origins trace back to the Chola period, with significant contributions from the Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagar Nayak Kings, and the Travancore royal family. Its grand gopurams and intricate carvings are a testament to the region’s rich architectural and cultural heritage.

Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple welcomes devotees daily from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The best time to visit is during the early morning hours between 5 and 8 AM or during the evening aarti. The winter months from November to February are particularly pleasant for pilgrims. Entry for darshan is free, allowing all visitors to experience the temple’s spiritual ambiance without any fee.

The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are required to wear a dhoti with a formal shirt or upper cloth, while women should wear a saree or churidar with dupatta or chunnari. Shorts, jeans, tight clothing, skirts, and western attire are not permitted within the temple premises. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum and certain areas, and cameras are generally not allowed inside.

Major festivals celebrated here include the Margazhi festival in December-January and the Chithirai festival in April-May, drawing devotees from across the region.

Reaching Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple is convenient. From Nagercoil, it is just 5 km via NH66, accessible by local bus, auto-rickshaw, or taxi. The temple is about 12-15 km from Kanyakumari and 75 km from Thiruvananthapuram, with Nagercoil Junction railway station only 3.8 km away. Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is the nearest airport, situated 75 km from the temple.

Pilgrims can find basic accommodation at the temple guest house, while a range of hotels from budget to luxury are available in Nagercoil and Kanyakumari. Nearby attractions include Kanyakumari (12 km), Padmanabhapuram Palace (20 km), Vattakottai Fort (20 km), and Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum (76 km).
