About

Arulmighu Dhandayuthapani Swami Temple, also widely known as the Palani Murugan Temple, is a revered pilgrimage centre situated atop Sivagiri Hill in Palani, Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu.

Dedicated to Lord Murugan, this ancient hill temple is renowned for its striking Dravidian architecture and draws devotees from across India seeking spiritual solace and darshan.

The temple is also referred to locally as Palani Temple, and is one of the most significant Murugan shrines in the region. The temple welcomes visitors daily from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with special early morning hours (4:00 AM – 4:30 AM) on festival days.

For those planning a visit, the best time to experience the serene atmosphere and vibrant rituals is during the early morning hours between 5:00 AM and 8:00 AM, or in the cooler winter months from November to February.

The festival season also attracts large numbers of pilgrims, offering a unique spiritual experience. A traditional dress code is observed at the temple.

Men are expected to wear attire such as dhoti with shirt, pajama, or pants, while women are advised to wear modest outfits like sarees, churidar, or salwar kameez. This ensures a respectful and devotional atmosphere within the temple premises.

Darshan options at the Arulmighu Dhandayuthapani Swami Temple include free darshan and special darshan tickets priced at ₹10 and ₹300, catering to the needs of all devotees.

The temple's daily pooja schedule is extensive, beginning with Vishvarupa Darsanam at 5:40 AM, followed by rituals such as Vila pooja, Sirukala Shanti Pooja, Kala Shanthi Pooja, Uchi Kaala Pooja, Sayaraksha (Raja Alankaram), the Golden Car Procession at 6:30 PM, and concluding with Rakaala Pooja at 8:00 PM.

Poojas are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit, reflecting the temple’s rich cultural heritage. Reaching the temple is convenient.

Pilgrims can arrive in Palani town by train or bus, proceed to the base of the hill (Adivaram), and ascend the 659 steps, or opt for the winch, rope car, or the elephant path.

Ample parking is available at the foot of the hill, and special arrangements are made for elderly or differently-abled devotees. Palani Railway Station is just 1 km away, while Dindigul Junction is 60 km from the temple.

The nearest airports are Coimbatore International Airport (100 km) and Madurai Airport (130 km). Accommodation options include temple-managed cottages and dormitories, as well as numerous private hotels and lodges near Adivaram, with larger hotels available in Dindigul.

Nearby attractions include Thiru Avinankudi Temple, Giri Veethi (Giri Valam Path), Periyanayagi Amman Temple, and the scenic Kodaikanal Hill Station. Photography is generally prohibited inside the main shrine, and cell phones or cameras are not allowed near the sanctum sanctorum.
