About

The Udayagiri Cave Temples in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, are a remarkable destination for devotees, history enthusiasts, and travelers seeking a glimpse into ancient Indian rock-cut architecture.

Also known locally as Udayagiri, Vishnupadagiri, Sunrise Mountain, or Sunrise Hill, these temples are situated near Udaigiri/Sonpur village, just about 4–5 km from Vidisha town.

This ASI-protected monument is celebrated for its unique rock-cut cave structures and its association with the Gupta dynasty, having been built by Emperor Chandragupta II Vikramaditya and further developed under Kumaragupta I.

The primary deity worshipped here is Lord Vishnu, but the caves also feature shrines and carvings dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Shakti (Amman), the Matrikas, Durga, Lord Ganesha, river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, as well as Jain Tirthankaras Parshvanatha and Adinath.

This diversity makes Udayagiri a significant pilgrimage site for followers of multiple faiths. Visitors can explore the ancient cave temples, which are carved into the hillside and showcase the rock-cut architectural style.

The site is open daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with timings sometimes extending to 7:00 or 8:00 PM on certain days. Entry is through a free darshan system, with a nominal fee of ₹15 per person.

Still photography is allowed for personal use, while professional video equipment may require a small additional fee.

The best time to visit Udayagiri Cave Temples is during the winter months from November to February or in the early morning hours between 5 and 8 AM, when the weather is pleasant and the site is less crowded. The World Heritage Week in November is a notable event celebrated at the caves.

For those planning a visit, Vidisha Railway Station is the nearest railhead, just 4 km away, while Raja Bhoj Airport in Bhopal is about 60 km from the site.

From Vidisha, auto-rickshaws or taxis can be hired to reach the caves, with a motorable road leading to a designated parking area at the foot of the hill.

Visitors should be prepared for a short walk along stone-cut paths and stairs to explore the caves, as the terrain is uneven and not fully wheelchair-accessible.

Accommodation options near Udayagiri Cave Temples include MPT Jungle Resort Udaigiri (within 0.5 km), Enrise by Sayaji Vidisha (6 km), and Hotel Tirupati Palace (3–5 km).

Nearby attractions such as the Heliodorus Pillar, Sanchi Stupa, District Museum Vidisha, and Bija Mandal add further interest to your pilgrimage or sightseeing trip. For more information, visitors can refer to the official website of Vidisha district.
