About

Tiruvannamalai Annamalayar Temple, also known locally as Annamalaiyar Temple, Arunachalesvara Temple, or Arunachala Temple, is a revered Hindu pilgrimage centre located in Pavazhakundur, Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, the temple also houses shrines for Goddess Parvati, Ganesh, Murugan, and various forms of Shiva and Parvati, making it a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings.

This ancient temple is renowned as one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams and stands as a magnificent example of Dravidian architecture. With its origins tracing back to the Chola period, the temple has seen contributions from the Pallavas, Sambuvaryars, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara Kings, and Nayaks.

Recognized as an ASI-protected monument, it is a testament to centuries of devotion and heritage. The temple is open daily from 5:30 AM to 12:30 PM and from 3:30 PM to 9:30 PM, allowing ample time for devotees to participate in rituals and seek darshan.

The best time to visit is during the early morning hours (5–8 AM), in the winter months from November to February, or during the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Karthigai Deepam (November-December), Chitrai, Ani, Adipooram, Puratasi, Aipasi, Margazhi, Thai, and Panguni, each drawing large numbers of pilgrims.

A variety of poojas are conducted daily, such as Gomotha Pooja at 5:30 AM, Oudshakala Pooja at 6:00 AM, Early Sathi Pooja at 8:30 AM, Kalasanthi at 9:30 AM, Uchikala Pooja between 11:00 and 11:30 AM, Sayarakshai Pooja from 5:30 to 6:00 PM, and Ardhajama Pooja from 9:00 to 9:30 PM.

Special abhishekam and pooja options are available, including Parivara Moorthi Sannathi Milk Abishekam, Thirukkalyana Utsavam Special Abishekam, 1008 Sangu Pooja, and Mahanyasam with Special Pooja. Poojas are performed in Tamil and Sanskrit.

Darshan options include free entry and a special darshan for Rs. 50. Devotees are expected to follow the dress code: traditional attire for men (dhoti or pajamas with shirt) and saree, churidar, or salwar kameez for women, with modest clothing required. Reaching the temple is convenient.
