About

Thyagarajar Temple, also known locally as Tiruvarur Thiyagarajar Temple, Putridankondar, and Veedhi Vitankar, is a renowned ancient temple and pilgrimage centre situated in Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu.

Located near the Kamalalayam Temple Tank, this grand temple stands as a testament to the Dravidian architectural style and the rich heritage of the Chola period. Built by the Chola Dynasty and expanded by later Chola kings and Vijayanagar rulers, the temple continues to be a living heritage site managed by a panchayat or local trust.

The primary deity worshipped here is Lord Shiva, with the temple also housing shrines for other deities such as Neelotpalambika, Kamalambika, Durga, Lord Muruga, Bhoga Shakti, and Aatakeswaram. Recognized as a Shakti Peetha, Thyagarajar Temple draws devotees seeking spiritual solace and blessings.

The temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, making early mornings, especially between 5–8 AM, an ideal time for peaceful darshan. The winter months from November to February and the festival season, particularly during the annual brahmotsavam, are considered the best times to visit. The Tiruvarur Chariot Festival (Aazhi Ther), held in March-April (Panguni), is a major event that attracts thousands of pilgrims.

Devotees can participate in various daily poojas conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit, including Ushathkalam at 5:30 AM, Kalasanthi at 8:00 AM, Uchikalam at 10:00 AM, Sayarakshai at 6:00 PM, Irandamkalam at 7:00 PM, and Ardha Jamam at 8:00 PM. Special poojas, such as the Nitya Pradosham and the Full Moon pooja for Kamalambiga at 9:30 PM, offer unique spiritual experiences. Darshan options include free darshan, special darshan, and VIP darshan.

Visitors are requested to adhere to the temple’s dress code: men should wear traditional attire such as dhotis or trousers with a shirt or kurta, while lungis are discouraged; women are expected to wear modest traditional attire like sarees, salwars, or churidars with a dupatta.

Reaching the temple is convenient, with Tiruvarur Junction Railway Station and Tiruvarur New Bus Stand nearby. Local buses, autorickshaws, or taxis can take you directly to the temple on Sannathi Street in Vasan Nagar. The nearest airport is Tiruchirapalli International Airport, about 110 km away.

Ample parking is available near the temple complex, and while the main entrance is accessible, the large scale of the temple may present mobility challenges for some visitors. Photography is allowed in the outer courtyard and of main architectural features, but it is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum sanctorum. Professional camera equipment requires prior permission.

After daily poojas, devotees can partake in various prasadams, and annadanam is generally offered, especially during festivals. Accommodation options range from mid-range hotels and guesthouses near the town center and railway station to basic temple rooms, with more luxurious stays available in nearby Thanjavur. Nearby attractions include the Kamalalayam Temple Tank, Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur (55 km), and Nagore Dargah (20 km).
