About

Thrikodithanam Mahavishnu Temple, also known locally as Athpudha Narayanan Temple, Amirutha Narayanan Temple, and Thrikodithanam Mahavishnu Kshetram, is a revered pilgrimage centre located in Thrikodithanam village near Changanassery, Kottayam district, Kerala.

This ancient temple is celebrated as one of the Divya Desams and is dedicated primarily to Lord Vishnu.

The temple also houses shrines for several other deities including Goddess Lakshmi (Karpagavalli), Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna, Lord Narasimha, Lord Ganapathi, Dharma Sastha (Ayyappa), Dakshinamurti, Subrahmanya (Murugan), Naga Deities, and Kshetrapala.

The temple is an outstanding example of Kerala architecture, with its traditional stone pathways and steps. It holds the status of a living heritage temple and is recognized as a state heritage site.

The historical period of the temple is unknown or disputed, with associations to Sahadeva (mythological) and the Second Chera Empire (historical, 9th century CE).

Devotees can participate in various poojas such as Palliunarthal, Abhishekam, Usha Pooja (early morning), Pantheerati Pooja, Navaka Kalabhishekam, Ucha Pooja (midday), Athazha Pooja (night), and the Thursday Narasimha Murthy Pooja.

Rituals are conducted in Sanskrit, Malayalam, and English, ensuring accessibility for a diverse group of pilgrims. The temple offers free darshan for all visitors. The temple is open daily from 4:00/5:00 AM to 11:00 AM and from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The best time to visit is during the morning hours (8 AM–12 PM), early morning (5–8 AM), evening aarti, winter months (November–February), and during the festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Deepa Mahotsavam (Annual Festival) in November–December (Vrishchikam, Thiruvonam star) and the Monthly Sravana Deepam on every Thiruvonam nakshatra.

Visitors are required to adhere to a strict dress code: men must wear a traditional mundu or dhoti and remain bare-chested above the waist inside the inner sanctum, while women are expected to wear sarees, traditional skirts and blouses, or modest salwar kameez/churidar with dupatta.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the temple premises, and mobile phones should be switched off or left outside.
