About

Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple, located in the Ettumanoor Temple Road area of Kottayam district, Kerala, is a renowned pilgrimage centre and ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Revered locally as Ettumanoorappan or Udhruthaina Puram, this temple is a living heritage site with a rich history, having been reconstructed in 1542 CE by the local rulers and royal families of Travancore.

The temple is celebrated for its distinctive Kerala architecture, drawing devotees and visitors seeking spiritual solace and cultural experiences. The main sanctum is devoted to Lord Shiva, while the temple complex also houses shrines for Lord Ganapathi, Lord Sastha (Ayyappan), and Dakshinamurthy.

Pilgrims can participate in a variety of daily poojas, including Nirmalyam (4:00–4:30 AM), Abhishekam (4:30–5:00 AM), Usha Pooja/Madhavippalli Pooja (5:00–6:00 AM), Ethruthu Pooja, Pantheeradi Pooja, Dhaara and Navakom, Ucha Pooja, and Ucha Sree Bali in the morning, as well as Deeparadhana (6:30–7:00 PM), Athaazha Pooja, and Athaazha Sree Bali in the evening.

Special poojas such as Ashtothararchana, Sahasranarchana, Ganapati Homam, Ashtadravya Ganapathyhomam, Bhaghavathi Seva, and Choroonu are available, with prices ranging from ₹10 to ₹500. Rituals are conducted in Sanskrit, Malayalam, and English, accommodating a diverse group of devotees.

Temple timings are from 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM, with the best time to visit being early mornings, during morning poojas, evening aarti, winter months (November–February), and the festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include the Ezhara Ponnana Ezhunallathu (Annual Festival) in February–March, Maha Shivaratri, Pradosham, Vishu, Onam, and Navaratri. For darshan, free entry is available to all devotees.

The temple enforces a strict dress code: men are required to wear traditional mundu or dhoti with the upper body bare, while women should wear saree, salwar kameez, churidar, or traditional long skirts and blouses.

Photography and mobile phones are strictly prohibited inside the nalambalam and near the sanctum. Reaching the temple is convenient via State Highway 1 (MC Road) from Kochi or Kottayam. The Ettumanoor bus stand is just 600 meters to 1 km away, with easy access by auto-rickshaw or taxi.

Ettumanoor Railway Station is 2 km away, and Kottayam Railway Station is 11 km from the temple. The nearest airports are Cochin International Airport (75 km) and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (160 km).

Devotees can partake in prasadam such as vibhooti, chandan, and blessed rice grains, and daily Annadanam (free midday meal) is offered with tokens distributed in the morning.

Accommodation options are plentiful, including Kaamyakam Residency next to the temple, Sivasakthi Lodge (less than 100 meters), Brindavan Residency (0.9 km), Altinho Heritage Castle Homestay (1.2 km), and hotels in Kottayam town (10–11 km away).
