About

Erumeli Sree Dharma Sastha Temple, also locally known as Valiyambalam, is a revered pilgrimage centre and ancient hill temple situated in the heart of Erumeli town, Kottayam district, Kerala.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Ayyappan, the temple also enshrines Lord Ganesha, Lord Murugan, and features Naga Prathistha within its Kerala-style architectural complex. Its strategic location makes it a significant stop for pilgrims, especially those embarking on the Sabarimala pilgrimage.

The temple is recognized for its living heritage status and is traditionally associated with the early royals of the Pandalam Royal Family.

The sanctum and core premises uphold strict traditions, including a dress code: men are required to wear a traditional mundu (dhoti) and remove upper garments inside the sanctum, while women are expected to wear saree, set-mundu, or long skirts with blouses.

Western attire and short clothing are not permitted, ensuring the sanctity of the temple space. Darshan at Erumeli Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is free for all devotees.

The temple observes different timings based on the season: during the off-season, it is open from 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, while in the pilgrimage season, timings extend from 3:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

The best times to visit include the winter months (November to February), during morning hours, evening aarti, and especially during the annual brahmotsavam and festival seasons.

Devotees can participate in various poojas such as Archana, Pushpanjali, Neeranjanam, Ellu Payasam, Paanakam, Muzhukkappu, Pushpabhishekam, and Kalabhabhishekam, with pooja services conducted in Sanskrit, Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu.

Prasadam offerings include Aravana Payasam, Appam, Vibhuti, and Chandanam, with free Annadanam (mass feeding) provided, particularly during the Mandala season.

The temple celebrates major festivals like Thiruulsavam (Annual Festival) in February, Mandala-Makaravilakku & Petta Thullal from November to January, and the Chandanakudam Festival in December–January.

For those planning a visit, the temple is accessible from Kottayam (about 50 km via KK Road), Kochi (approximately 98–106 km), and is a short walk or auto-rickshaw ride from the Erumeli Bus Stand.

The nearest railway stations are Thiruvalla (45 km), Chengannur (48 km), and Kottayam (49.3 km), while the closest airports are Cochin International Airport (108 km) and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (140 km).

Parking is convenient with a dedicated open ground near the temple, and wheelchair-friendly ramp access is available at entry and exit points.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the sanctum and core premises, and mobile phones must be switched off or deposited before entering the inner nalambalam.

Accommodation options in Erumeli include Travancore Devaswom Board rooms, Erumely Palace, Grand Victoria Hotel, SABARI STAY, and several budget and mid-range lodges near the temple and town center.
