About

Thirumullavaram Mahavishnu Temple, also known locally as Thirumullavaram Sree Maha Vishnu Swamy Temple, is a revered pilgrimage centre situated in Thirumullavaram, Kollam, Kerala.

Nestled on the riverbank and adjacent to the scenic Thirumullavaram Beach, this ancient temple is a significant spiritual destination for devotees of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The temple is renowned for its Kerala-style architecture and tranquil village setting, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a peaceful darshan experience.

The temple is open for darshan from Monday to Saturday between 5:00 AM and 7:30 PM, and on Sundays from 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM, and again from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

Devotees can participate in a range of traditional poojas including Usha Pooja, Ucha Pooja, Deeparadhana (evening), Pushpanjali, Archana, Neyvilakku, and the special Udayasthamana Pooja. Rituals are conducted in both Sanskrit and Malayalam, preserving the temple’s deep-rooted cultural heritage.

Entry for darshan is free, allowing all devotees to seek blessings without any fee.

The temple observes a strict dress code: men are required to wear a traditional Kerala dhoti (mundu) and must remove shirts and T-shirts before entering the inner sanctum, while women are expected to wear sarees, long skirts with blouses, or modest churidars with dupatta.

Revealing or tight-fitting western attire is discouraged to maintain the sanctity of the temple premises. Thirumullavaram Mahavishnu Temple comes alive during its vibrant festivals.

The Thiruvona Mahotsavam in March–April and Karkidaka Vavu Bali in July–August are the most significant, drawing large numbers of devotees.

Annadanam (free food) is organized during these festivals and on other holy days, and prasadam includes chandanam, theertham, pushpam, and traditional offerings like appam or aravana payasam on special occasions. Reaching the temple is convenient from Kollam city, just 4–5 km away.

Visitors can arrive via main transit hubs such as Chinnakada or Kollam Junction, then proceed north towards Thirumullavaram using Thangassery Road or the coastal route. Local auto-rickshaws and KSRTC buses are readily available.

Kollam Junction Railway Station is the nearest railhead, about 5 km away, while Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is 61 km from the temple.

For accommodation, a range of options is available in Kollam town, from budget hotels to premium backwater resorts such as The Leela Ashtamudi and Dfort Hotel Kollam, all within a short distance.

Visitors can also explore nearby attractions like Thirumullavaram Beach, Thangassery Light House, Thevally Palace, and Sambranikodi Island. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main temple complex, and parking is available though it may be crowded during major festivals. For further information, devotees can contact the temple at +91-9249404020.
