About

Kottankulangara Devi Temple, also known locally as Kottankulangara Sree Bhagavathy Temple or Kottankulangara Amma, is a revered ancient temple and pilgrimage centre dedicated to Goddess Shakti (Amman) in Chavara, Kollam district, Kerala.

Situated in the Kottankulangara area, opposite the Chavara Bus Stand along Kottukadu Road, this temple is a prominent spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings of the Divine Mother.

The temple exemplifies traditional Kerala architecture and stands as a living heritage temple, drawing pilgrims and visitors throughout the year.

Though the exact historical period of its origin remains unknown and is subject to local lore, the temple’s significance is deeply rooted in the religious and cultural fabric of the region. Devotees can participate in daily poojas conducted in Sanskrit and Malayalam.

The temple opens for darshan from 5:00 AM to 11:00 AM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. The day begins with Palliyunarthu (Waking the Goddess) at 5:00 AM, followed by Usha Pooja at 7:30 AM, Ucha Pooja at 10:30 AM, Deeparadhana (Evening lamp worship) at 6:45 PM, and Athazha Pooja at 7:30 PM.

Entry for darshan is free, allowing devotees to experience the spiritual ambiance without any fee.

The temple observes a strict dress code: men are required to wear traditional attire such as mundu or dhoti with the upper chest bare or covered with a simple cloth; shirts, trousers, and jeans are not permitted in the inner sanctum.

Women should wear sarees, half-sarees, or long skirts with modest tops or salwar kameez, while western or modern casual outfits are not allowed inside.

Kottankulangara Devi Temple is especially vibrant during the Kottankulangara Chamayavilakku festival, held in March on the 10th and 11th days of the Malayalam month Meenam. The best times to visit include early mornings, evening aarti, winter months (November to February), and the festival season.

Reaching the temple is convenient: from Kollam Junction railway station (13 km), taxis or auto-rickshaws via NH-66 provide easy access. Buses towards Kollam or Trivandrum stop at Kottankulangara/Chavara, just 450 meters from the temple.

The nearest airports are Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (80 km) and Cochin International Airport (150 km).

Pilgrims will find accommodation options ranging from premium hotels like The Leela Ashtamudi and Club Mahindra Ashtamudi to budget lodges such as Sreebhadra Residency near Chavara and Karunagappalli. Parking is available near the premises, with additional arrangements during major festivals.

The temple compound is generally accessible, though assistance may be needed for those with mobility challenges. Photography is prohibited inside the inner sanctum and during rituals, but casual mobile photos are allowed in exterior areas with professional equipment requiring prior permission.

Prasadam includes kumkum, holy ash, and sweet offerings like Payasam, with free annadanam distributed during special festivals.

Nearby attractions include Ashtamudi Lake, Sasthamkotta Lake, Munroe Island, Thangassery Light House & Beach, and Kollam Beach, making this temple a spiritual and cultural highlight in Kerala. For more details, visitors can refer to the official website or contact the temple directly.
