About

Kottarakkara Sree Mahaganapathy Temple, also known locally as Kizhakkekara Shiva Kshethram and Kottarakkara Mahaganapathi Temple, is a revered pilgrimage centre and ancient temple located in Chenthara, near Pulamon Junction, Kottarakkara, Kollam district, Kerala.

This temple is renowned for its Kerala-style architecture and its status as a living heritage temple managed by a panchayat/local trust.

The primary deity worshipped here is Lord Shiva, with prominent shrines for Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati (Padinjattu Bhagavathi), Lord Murugan, Lord Ayyappan, Nagaraja, and Nagayakshi, making it a spiritually significant destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings.

The temple is open daily from 4:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the best time to visit being during the winter months (November to February), the festival season, or early mornings between 5 and 8 AM.

Visitors are required to adhere to a traditional dress code: men must wear a Kerala mundu (dhoti) and remove shirts or upper garments when entering the inner sanctum, while women are expected to wear sarees, salwar kameez/churidar with dupatta, or long skirts and blouses.

Western or revealing clothing is strictly prohibited. Darshan at the Kottarakkara Sree Mahaganapathy Temple is free for all devotees.

Various poojas are performed in Sanskrit and Malayalam, including Archana, Dravya Pooja, Palabhishekam, Neyyuvilakku (Ghee Lamp), Ganapathi Homam/Karuka Homam, Sahasranamarchana, Ashtadravya Ganapathyhomam (at 5:30 AM), and Udayasthamana Pooja.

Pooja prices range from INR 15 to INR 60, depending on the ritual. Free Annadanam is organized during major festivals and spiritual observances, and the temple’s Unniyappam prasadam is especially popular among visitors.

The temple celebrates several vibrant festivals such as Vinayaka Chaturthi (August–September), Meda Thiruvathira Ulsavam (April–May), Mandalachirappu (November–January), Navaratri (September–October), Shivaratri (February–March), Ayilyam-Makam (October), and Thaipooyam.

Reaching the temple is convenient, with Kottarakkara Railway Station just 1 km away and Kollam Junction 27 km away. Trivandrum International Airport is 70 km from the temple, and Cochin International Airport is 135 km away.

From the Kottarakkara KSRTC Bus Stand or railway station, auto-rickshaws and taxis are readily available to the temple, which is situated on the Kollam–Thirumangalam/NH-744 route. Ample free parking is provided near the temple, though the inner temple has stone steps and raised thresholds.

Multiple accommodation options are available within 1 km, including Highland Hotel, Hotel Ambalakkara Regency, and Anns Tourist Home. Nearby attractions include Meenpidi Para, Muttara Maruthimala Eco Tourism, Jatayu Earth Center, and Kollam Beach.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum and courtyard, though distant shots of the outer architecture or pond may occasionally be allowed. For more information, visit the official website or contact the temple directly. Online darshan and pooja booking are also available.
