About

Thiruchendur Murugan Temple, also known locally as Subramanya Swamy Temple, Senthil Andavar Temple, and Tiruchendur Senthilnathar Temple, is a renowned pilgrimage centre situated on the eastern edge of Tiruchendur in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. Overlooking the shores of the Bay of Bengal, this ancient seaside temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Murugan, with shrines also for Lord Shiva (Thiruchendur Nathar) and Lord Vishnu (Perumal). The temple’s Dravidian architectural style and its status as a living heritage temple attract devotees and tourists alike.

The temple is open daily from 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 12:30 PM to 9:00 PM, allowing ample time for darshan and participation in rituals. Devotees can choose from free darshan, special darshan (₹100), or seeghra darshan (₹250), depending on their preference. Several poojas are performed throughout the day, including the Vishwaroopam Darshan at 5:30 AM, Udaya Marthanda Abhishekam at 6:15 AM, Kalasandhi Pooja from 8:00 to 8:30 AM, Uchikala Abhishekam at 10:30 AM, Sayaratchai Pooja at 5:00 PM, and Arthasama Pooja at 8:15 PM. Special offerings such as Abhishekam (₹500/₹3000), Archana (₹51/₹201), and Golden Car Seva (Swarna Ratham, ₹2000) are available for devotees. All rituals are conducted in Tamil.

Thiruchendur Murugan Temple is especially vibrant during festivals like Skanda Sashti (October-November), Thai Poosam (January-February), Masi Magam (February-March), Panguni Uthiram (March-April), and Vaikasi Visakam (May-June). The best time to visit is during winter (November to February), early mornings (5–8 AM), evening aarti, or festival seasons for a spiritually uplifting experience.

Reaching the temple is convenient: Tiruchendur Railway Station is just 1.5 km away, and Tirunelveli Junction is 58 km away. Tuticorin Airport is 32.5 km from the temple, while Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is 175 km away. From the railway station or bus stand, visitors can take an auto-rickshaw or walk down Sannathi Street to the temple entrance. Ample parking, battery cars, and wheelchair facilities ensure accessibility for all.

A strict dress code is observed: men are required to wear dhotis or pyjamas with upper cloth, though pants and shirts are allowed; lungis and shorts are prohibited. Women should wear sarees, salwar kameez, or churidars with dupatta. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum, and mobile phones or cameras are not allowed in the inner shrine.

The temple provides free Annadanam, especially on festival days, and prasadam such as Panjamirtham and Vibhuti. Accommodation options include budget hotels, temple trust rooms, and private lodges near the temple and bus station. Nearby attractions include Subramaniya Swamy Temple Beach, Valli Cave, Nazhi Kinaru, Kulasekharapattinam Mutharamman Temple, and Karkuvel Ayyanar Temple.
