Sri Veerabhadra Swami Temple Lepakshi

Set atop Kurma Saila (Tortoise Hill), this temple is a significant monument from the Vijayanagara period, built by Virupanna Nayaka and Viranna, who served as governors under King Achyuta Deva Raya.

The temple is recognized as an ASI-protected heritage site, drawing devotees, history enthusiasts, and architecture lovers alike. The temple’s primary deity is Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Veerabhadra Swami.

Within the complex, devotees can also offer prayers to other deities such as Papanaseswara (another form of Shiva), Raghunatha (Vishnu), Bhadrakali, and Ganesha. Daily rituals and poojas are conducted in Sanskrit and Telugu, with the Suprabhatam or Morning Pooja held from 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM.

Archana and Abhishekam can be performed for a fee of Rs. 300, and Evening Sevas are offered from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM. The temple is open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and free darshan is available to all visitors.

Lepakshi Temple is especially vibrant during festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Rathotsavam, and Lepakshi Utsavam in February. Pilgrims visiting during these times can experience the temple’s spiritual energy and cultural significance.

The best time to visit is early in the morning between 5–8 AM or during the winter months from November to February for a pleasant experience. Visitors are encouraged to dress in traditional attire—men in dhoti, kurta, or smart casuals, and women in sarees or churidar with dupatta.

On-site parking is available for a fee of Rs. 50–80, though some accessibility challenges exist for wheelchair users. Photography is permitted within the temple complex but is generally restricted inside the main sanctum.

Reaching Lepakshi is convenient: from Bengaluru, take NH44 towards Hyderabad, exit at Kodikonda Checkpost, and follow signs to Lepakshi (about 14 km from the highway). From Hindupur, local buses and auto-rickshaws are available (15 km east).

The nearest railway stations are Hindupur (14 km), Gauribidanur (30 km), and Sai P Nilayam (60 km). Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, is about 94 km away. For accommodation, Haritha Hotel and Lepakshi VGR Tourist Lodge are available in Lepakshi, with more options in Hindupur.
