Panakala Lakshmi Narasimha Swami Temple

This ancient hill temple is a revered pilgrimage centre, attracting devotees and visitors from across India who seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu, the temple’s primary deity.

The temple also enshrines Goddess Lakshmi, Anjaneya Swamy (Hanuman), and Gandala Narasimha Swamy, making it a significant spiritual destination for followers of the Vaishnavite tradition. The temple is renowned for its Dravidian architecture and its status as a living heritage temple.

The Gali Gopuram, an imposing tower at the entrance, was constructed by Raja Vasireddy Venkatadri Naidu between 1807 and 1809, while the temple itself received land grants from the Vijayanagara kings in the 16th century.

Despite the historical period of the temple being unknown or disputed, its cultural and religious significance remains undiminished. Devotees can visit the hill temple between 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM, while the town temple at the foot of the hill is open from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

Darshan options include free darshan and a special darshan with a fee of INR 90.

The temple is especially vibrant during the annual Brahmotsavam (Mangalagiri Tirunala) held in February-March, Narasimha Jayanti in May, Vaikunta Ekadashi in December-January, and other festivals such as Santha Narasimha Swamy Kalyanam, Rathotsavam, Srirama Navami, and Hanuman Jayanthi.

A unique aspect of the temple is the Panakam Offering (Panaka Nivedana), where devotees offer jaggery water to the deity between 7:00 AM and 3:30 PM. Other poojas include Abhishekam (INR 300/2000), Special Archana/Poojas (INR 51/201), and Panaka Seva (INR 200/3000).

Rituals are conducted in Telugu and Sanskrit. Panakam is also distributed as prasadam, and free food (annadanam) is served daily around noon.

Reaching the temple is convenient, with Mangalagiri Railway Station just 1 km away, and Vijayawada Junction and Guntur Junction at 15 km and 30 km, respectively. Vijayawada International Airport is 35 km from the temple.

Visitors can access the temple by road via NH16, or by climbing the stone steps (Metla Margam) from the Lakshmi Narasimha temple at the hill’s base. Parking is available at the top of the hill and is wheelchair accessible.

Photography is restricted within the temple premises, and visitors are advised to follow the dress code for men and women, emphasizing modest and traditional attire.
