About

Sri Indrakeeladri Durga Temple, also known locally as Sri Durga Malleswara Swamyvarla Devasthanam or Kanaka Durga Temple, is a renowned pilgrimage centre situated atop Indrakeeladri Hill in Durga Agraharam, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.

Revered as a Shakti Peetha, this ancient hill temple stands majestically on the banks of the Krishna River, drawing devotees from across India who seek the blessings of Goddess Shakti, the temple’s primary deity.

Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Malleswara Swamy, is also venerated within the temple complex. The temple’s Dravidian architecture reflects its historical significance, with origins attributed to the Chalukya dynasty in the 8th century.

Sri Indrakeeladri Durga Temple is recognized as a living heritage temple under local trust management, maintaining its spiritual and cultural vibrancy through the ages. Devotees can visit the temple daily from 4:00 AM to 1:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Early morning hours between 5 and 8 AM, the winter months (November to February), and festival seasons are considered the best times for darshan. The temple offers multiple darshan options, including free darshan, special darshan (INR 100), and VIP darshan.

Online darshan booking is available through the official website. A variety of poojas are performed, such as Kumkumarchana, Suprabhatha Seva (around 3:00 AM), Snapanabhishekam in the morning, Pavalimpu (Ekantha) Seva around 9:00 PM, and Paroksha Seva (Virtual Kumkumarchana).

Rituals are conducted in Telugu and Sanskrit, ensuring a traditional spiritual experience.

The temple is especially vibrant during major festivals like Dasara Sharannavaratri (September–October), Sakambhari Utsavam (June–July), Ashada Saare Mahotsavam (July), and Vasanta Navaratri & Ugadi (March–April).

For those planning a visit, the temple is easily accessible from Vijayawada Junction Railway Station (3 km) and Vijayawada International Airport (20 km).

From the city, devotees can take a city bus or auto-rickshaw to the temple base, then either climb approximately 400 steps or use authorized vehicles or GHMC buses up the ghat road.

Designated parking is available near the temple, though private vehicles are restricted on the ghat road between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. A lift facility is provided for senior citizens.

Temple trust accommodation is available on the hill, with numerous hotels and guesthouses in Vijayawada city center just 2–3 km away. Pilgrims can partake in prasadam such as pulihora, laddu, and pongal, and benefit from free annadanam provided by the temple trust.

Photography and electronic gadgets are not permitted inside the premises and must be deposited in the cloak room.

Nearby attractions include Prakasam Barrage, Krishna River Ghats, Bhavani Island, Rajiv Gandhi Park, and Undavalli Caves, making a visit to Sri Indrakeeladri Durga Temple a spiritually enriching and memorable experience in Vijayawada.
