About

Undavalli Cave Temple, also known locally as Undavalli Caves or the Rock-cut Temple of Undavalli, is a remarkable ancient cave temple situated in Tadepalle Mandal, Undavalli, in the NTR District of Andhra Pradesh.

This ASI-protected monument is celebrated for its unique rock-cut architecture and is set amidst the scenic hills near the Krishna River, making it a significant destination for devotees and history enthusiasts alike.

The temple is primarily dedicated to Lord Vishnu, with shrines also devoted to Brahma, Shiva, and Ganesha. As an ancient cave temple and hill temple, Undavalli Cave Temple stands out for its impressive multi-storeyed rock-cut structure, attributed to the Vishnukundin dynasty.

The historical period of its construction remains unknown or disputed, adding an air of mystery to its origins. The temple’s intricate carvings and monolithic sculptures are a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of its creators. Visitors can access the temple daily from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the early morning hours between 5–8 AM or later in the morning from 8 AM to 12 PM, when the weather is pleasant and the site is less crowded.

Modest clothing is recommended for both men and women to maintain the sanctity of the temple environment. For darshan, there is a free entry option with a nominal fee of INR 25.

Photography is permitted within the temple premises, allowing visitors to capture the stunning interiors and exteriors of this rock-cut marvel. The site offers a free parking lot, though visitors should note that the approach involves narrow stairs and is not wheelchair-friendly.

Reaching Undavalli Cave Temple is convenient from major transport hubs. From Vijayawada Railway Station, pilgrims can head towards Prakasam Barrage, cross the Krishna River, and proceed via Undavalli Road or Amaravathi Road to Undavalli Village.

Local auto-rickshaws, cabs, and Rapido services are available for last-mile connectivity. The nearest railway stations are Krishna Canal (3.9 km), Vijayawada Junction (6.5 km), and Mangalagiri. For those flying in, Vijayawada International Airport (Gannavaram) is about 21 km away.
